Spec 3 Pico Reef

Recommended Posts

tanacharison

I present to you another Fluval spec 3 pico reef! Last time this tank was running it was a freshwater shrimp tank. After a few years in the basement it's back for a fun nano-reef contest. This time I'm letting the family participate in this one... First choice is the winner of every taco Tuesday. Taco Bell sauce, mostly for the fun quotes. 😂

Tank: Fluval Spec 3 2.6g

Return Pump: Sicce Micra

Filtration: Intank Media basket

Light: ABI 23W Tuna Blue LED Bulb

Heater: 25W-Neo-Therm

Still unsure on what direction i'm going for with this tank. It's in my office area so it will get lots of natural light. I did a water change last night on my 120 and used some of the old water and rock to start this thing up. I'll let this thing cook in the dark a few weeks while I decide.

It's very distracting.. however it looks good on a white or silver stand.

Fair enough, I know mine is the 1st release version of the spec 3 (frosted glass), might have to hold it up with some wood lol

I have some frosted glass in the back of mine. I hate that the light mount is built in.. takes away from some of the custom options.

Mine was glued/silicone on, I ran some cheese wire between the light mount and glass to get it off

Ok theme time...

I'm scratching the traditional AIO media basket for a more natural filtration method. I want to use bacteria, micofana and corals to be the main sources of processing the excess nutrients. I'm thinking filterless reef and letting all the food, waste and other nutrients continue to suspend in the water column until breaking down enough for consumption. I'm wondering if by allowing all the waste to move around the tank will it provide constant food for the corals and sponges and allow the tank to keep more filter feeding species. Long term goal would be a nutrient rich system with lower nitrates and phosphates.

No filter floss, skimmer or carbon

Addition of copepods after cycle

Custom basket in overflow to hold mangroves for mild natural filtration purposes (could this replace water changes once established and growing)

Weekly addition of Benepets coral food and OceanMagik Phytoplankton

Bi-weekly 50% water changes to remove any pollutants that might build up and replenish elements

Best of luck! I am another proud spec owner!

following to see which route you’ll take. Really nice how our tanks just need a Little Rock and sand from an established aquarium and POOF. New life is born!

Really liking the floating rock. Reminds me of your vase reef slightly.
