Perfect situation for camouflage, just stick some legos to the sides and the hubs may never even notice the tank. Could make for a good theme too. 🙂 I think I’m gonna try to sneak mine in by my printer in my office. I love that cabinet in your pic earlier btw.

No I was thinking we could just decorate it for every holiday but the hubs took it down while I was at work one day. *however* He made his mom help him. And most days I feel like the toy section of Walmart barfed in my den. I refuse to look in the playroom.

At Home store. Has wheels so can move it in front of the SCA’s technical equipment to hide it, or move it out of the way to refill the ATO and dosing containers.

I wish my hubby would take down our decorations while I’m working... ours are still up. 😬😬😬 I could totally use Christmas pillows to hide my tank, but I may use office supplies instead.

On the subject of cooling, I am inclined to disallow closed loop chillers for the sake of all-in-one simplicity, but I am open to arguments. I don’t want tanks to suffer in the summer over temperature control, we all live in different climates after all. Probe based chillers are an option, but I know they have their limits.

Thoughts?

Well here are my further thoughts on this... ATOs and chillers seem like two sides of the same coin here to me.

Open top tanks avoid elevated temperatures due to air circulation and evaporative cooling, and a fan can even be added to aim at the surface if needed during warm times of the year. But people often add an ATO to compensate for the resulting water loss and to keep the tank stable. This is common, accepted, and is being allowed for this competition.

Closed tanks, on the other hand, may not get significant evaporation. I have never once needed to top off either of my Biocubes between weekly water changes; I do not have ATOs. The trade off is no evaporative cooling.

IMO, using a chiller seems equivalent to using an ATO.

Wish I could set up another saltwater tank, but I have more than enough water in my basement already. Just started converting the old contest pico into a mini freshwater palidarium.

Looks like this will be fun contest to watch though, good luck everyone!

Well the issue is that a tank with a lid like a Biocube is fully enclosed... I wouldn’t consider running mine without chillers personally... but it would be nice to include as an option here. It may be possible to rig a fan but it would be a drag to get disqualified from the competition if that doesn’t work out.

If I enter I won’t be using a Biocube anyway, because it won’t fit on my desk and would be too hard to convince the hubs that I need a third Biocube running 😬☺️, but I’d like to see the option for others since in my (totally biased!) opinion it’s the best AIO out there. 😁

I have a bc8 laying around, and although i loved the tank, the curved glass was annoying, from an unbiased point of view. 🙂 lol anyway, I'm tempted to fire up the bc8 (with diy leds) for this contest, but i have no place to put it...

Oh lord, here we go. Just as I was this last week thinking of transferring the pico from the last contest over to a larger tank that I was thinking of taking down. I have a portrait with a single Heterandria formosa male in it, and I was considering transferring him to the shrimp pico and swapping the pico over to the portrait to make it easier to work in.

When I first bought it-

IMG-20170713-144356.jpg

When it was at it's prime as a nice planted tank with a trio of Dario dario in it-

I think I'll drain it when I get home, and join the fray 🙂

I am looking forward to some  DIY AIO's

lets see your skills.

I made one a few years ago with stain glass covering plate glass but landloard said no to aquariums in the home ( it was literally a sack too)

dont think I have pics but the concept was cool!

Oh, also-

To anybody that happens to be local to the California east SF Bay area or Silicon Valley that want's to join the contest but is lacking in funds- I still have leftover dry rock, sand, and some live rock and live sand (the live stuff has been in a bucket to prevent algae, but it is still live and ready to go) that I will donate to your project- so long as it's for the contest tank. I can also donate some parts and materials (I still have an extra blueAcro 20K puck, drivers, PCBs, etc) to help on LED lighting if you're building a smaller setup and you choose to go the DIY route. I'm too busy and broke to ship but will gladly meet up somewhere for you to receive the goods 🙂

When it was at it's prime as a nice planted tank with a trio of Dario dario in it-

I think I'll drain it when I get home, and join the fray 🙂

Looks great! How do you like the tank? It was between this one and lifeguard 3.8 peninsula for me.

I just put in my placeholders and changed my signature.  It might be a bit before I get to work, although I think I have everything I need.

I like it, but trimming a narrow planted tank is not the most fun. I don't have my hands in my reef tanks as often so I think salt would be much better. Also easy to light higher intensity up to and low down on the bottom, so I think it's a good way to go.

Ya I was thinking the height might help keep a mixed reef.

lets see your skills.

I made one a few years ago with stain glass covering plate glass but landloard said no to aquariums in the home ( it was literally a sack too)

dont think I have pics but the concept was cool!

Lol don’t get me started on DIY 🤣
