Ammonia: 0.001

Nitrates: 1.5
Phos: 0.01

Calcium: 420

Mag: 1440

Alk: 3 Meq/L 8.4 dKH

Not much change especially when you account for testing errors. I’ll dose some phos and nitrate tonight.

Also, thanks to @Amphrites I have copepods and phytoplankton on the way.

Well I was sick as a dog the last two days. Finally feeling better and doing some more testing.

pH: 8.27

Ammonia: 0.001

Nitrate: 0

Phosphate: 0.04

Calcium: 410

Magnesium: 1440

Alkalinity: 2.8 / 7.8

Not surprised nitrate dropped after a couple of days without dosing. Going to filter some scum out through a filter floss stuffed sock then dose and see how it goes.

Guess Ill post a pic too since I haven’t in a while. Nothing too wonderful to look at. The hammer in the center has been looking annoyed for a week at least but its extra annoyed from me draining water into floss and adding it back in. Water level reached the hammer.

Wahoo! My lid from Octoaquatics is in the mail and on the way to me. I cant wait to get rid of the cobbled together “lid” I have on there now. I have a firefish goby in quarantine/observation waiting for the tank to be a little more stable so a good lid will be a must. These fish are little sea to air missiles. Although the additional bioload might actually help.

Well levels are getting closer at least. Dino’s didn’t look too bad today though that’s probably more from siphoning them out than anything else. Things are looking up I hope. Gatorade zoas are opening up a lot more now, guessing they like the added nutrients. One of these days I’ll actually get some decent pictures of all this stuff.

Things just keep trucking along with the tank. Still has Dino’s and I haven’t done any water changes but maybe it’s getting better.

Tried to get a decent pic of my yellow clown goby but he’s a brat and always moves when I try to get one.

Today’s test results:

Nitrate: 2

Phosphate: 0.02

The dosing continues. It looks like the Dino’s are retreating more. A coral frag that was basically smothered (clove polyps) is now mostly clear and some polyps survived. Filter floss is still getting changed out a couple times a day and every time I pull out more Dino’s. I think I am going to swap this hang-on-back for another small one that I just found in a tote. I hate the current one and I always liked the old one I just found.

In other news my lid is here and it fits like a glove.

Should contain any fish quite nicely. My yellow clown goby also decided to pose for just one picture.

Well I guess I can dial back the nutrient dosing a smidge. I still see plenty of dino’s but I guess I could call them controlled. My LFA got some Tigger pods in so I grabbed some to add to the tank. I have more pods and some phyto due to arrive on Saturday as well. The pods from my LFS looked very active and the bottle date was only ten or so days ago so I jumped on it.

Glued my three zoas down today. One was on a rock that I could pop off the plug but the other two had their mats right on the plugs. Ended up gluing the plugs to the rock work awkwardly. Eventually they should grow off the plugs enough that I can pull the plugs back out so it’s fine.

Lots of folks are without power here in Upstate NY. Just drove up to a friend’s place to try to rescue stuff from his tank. Tank water was ice cold so I am trying to slowly bring up temps as I add everything I could grab to my observation tank.

Been windy down here too, hopefully all the stock pulls through - another rough winter-storm pulling air from the arctic as a catalyst. This one spiked the temp up to 65F, last year's only hit the mid-50's, rather crazy stuff.

They will likely be going to my cousin’s house to recover as I haven’t really done anemones and this observation tank isn’t really equipped for them.

Surprised I haven’t had to start dosing any elements yet. I suppose that means I don’t have much coral growth. I have been replacing daily testing water with mixed reef crystals so that may also be a small factor. In general I am enjoying how the tank looks despite the issues. I have been seeing a little bubble algae on some of my frags but I have an emerald crab waiting in the wings in case he is needed. Picked him up today and threw him in observation.

As you can see the fire fish goby is now in the tank helping me raise nitrates. I am continuing to dose nitrates and phosphates to keep levels up. My calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity keep fluctuating and staying around the same. I attribute this to testing water replacement and user error. I am dosing a small amount to bump alkalinity a bit and get a better balance.

I got some free birdsnest coral today for myself and some friends so that’s in the tank now. It needs some rehab but I see polyps and hey free!

Well nutrients are about where I would like them to be now. I haven’t dosed nitrates since Tuesday so maybe they will start maintaining on their own. I guess we will see how it goes. Corals are doing pretty good at least. Birdsnest has a tendency to catch dunk strings which is annoying but expected. I’ve also added a nice green rock flower anemone with a red center who has of course planted himself in a hard to photograph spot between the glass and the rock.

Dino’s remain ever present and annoying. Used a turkey baster to pull a bunch out.

Nutrients are stable I guess. Keeping an eye on them but haven't dosed in a bit still. Other than corals being irritated by the dino strings everything seems to be doing pretty well. Lots of color although I don't see a ton of signs of growth except for some new duncan heads starting to form.

Just the birdsnest and some little encrusting thing whose name I have forgotten for SPS. LPS has always been my favorite. The Prime may be overkill but it looks great on the tank.

You are correct. It does look great!

Well I have put a 5 watt UV light in the tank to try to knock back these Dino’s. They’re driving me crazy and definitely irritate any SPS that goes in the tank. Unfortunately this UV is an in tank one and it barely fits so I don’t plan to keep it in but I am hoping it will knock back the Dino’s and give some other things a chance to compete. I’ll continue to dose phyto although I’m guessing it won’t last long against the UV. I guess we will see how this goes.

  • 2 weeks later...

So Ive had a busy last week or so thus not much in the way updates. Nitrates are at 6 and phosphates at 0.04. I ran the UV for a couple days and wasn't seeing much change. Decided to do a lights out with the UV for 72 hours. Now that thats complete I am taking the UV out for a couple days to see how its doing. Dino’s are definitely reduced but I do think they are still present. Seeing more hair algae and other things in the past couple days after the lights out so hopefully they now have a chance to outcompete dino’s. I am dosing phyto again now as well.
