Coral ID

Hi all!

I'm completely new to the hobby, and after doing a bunch of research I just got my first reef tank from a local shop. They gave me a bunch of rock, and a few corals came along for the ride. Below is an image of one I'm having trouble identifying. Does anyone know what this is?

Let me know if better quality pictures are needed.

Thanks!

Michael

Welcome to the community @merickson45, congrats on your first reef tank! That looks to be a Leptoseris coral to me.

Thanks Christopher! As you can see in the picture, after a few days the coral in question has opened up a bit and has short tentacles that sway in the current. All of the pictures of Leptoseris that I can find online don't have any visible tentacles. Are you sure this is a Leptoseris?

I thought it looked like a leptoseris as well from the original pic, but it sure does look fluffy! Maybe a little frag of a potato chip coral (pavona)? I’m not sure at all... looking forward to hearing what others think!!

Thanks banasophia! I think you may be right! It does look quite similar to some of the examples in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=7&v=dnFUBfrJoCs

Ah, very cool... and awesome that you posted that tidal gardens video! I haven’t seen that one before and I have a small hitchhiker coral that may be a pavona as well, so glad to learn more about them!!

Also, I see you’re new to the forum and looks like I get to do the honors and post my favorite emoji:
