Bab65
Hi everyone it is my week six since I started my tank and my ammonia level is still 0.25 is that OK or should I be concerned ? Quote Link to comment
seabass
Without additional information regarding the type of rock, previous levels, test kit used, pictures (of the tank and of the test results), ammonia dosing (or another source of ammonia), nitrite and nitrate levels... I could only guess and say that it's probably alright and you should soon see ammonia levels become undetectable. 1 Quote Link to comment
Bab65
Those are the Readings after a 20% water change today, it’s been six weeks now since I started the tank. Does everything looks good is my ammonia level OK or should I be more concerned any tips Quote Link to comment
seabass
What type of rock did you start with (dry, live shipped to you, cured live from a local source)? My guess is that you started with dry rock. Without nitrate, it appears that it hasn't processed much ammonia. If you started with dry rock, I'd add a bacteria culture, then start dosing ammonium chloride as directed in this guide. Quote Link to comment
Gravity
Did you dose any ammonia, ghost feed or add shrimp? Based on your Nitrite/Nitrate of zero I would guess that no ammonia was added. After a cycle I would expect at least 10 ppm nitrate which would not go to zero with a 20% water change. Quote Link to comment
Bab65
I used dry rocks. and yes i ghost feed 3 or 4 times before . Quote Link to comment
Gravity
I would say your tank hasn’t cycled yet. When ghost feeding the food takes a while to break down into ammonia before the nitrification cycle can start. It may be good to also continue feeding 1-2 times a week to simulate loading of a fish. Ghost feeding isn't a very accurate method, you cannot determine how much ammonia will be produced and it can add unnecessary nutrients to the tank. Unfortunately it looks like the ammonia produced by the few ghost feedings only produced 0.25 ammonia, not enough to cycle a tank. As others have mentioned, with dry rock, dosing ammonia and bacteria is the way to go. 1 Quote Link to comment
