Thrassian Atoll
I have absolutely no clue what happened to my orchid dottyback. He was eating fine and acting normal today. All of the other fish look fine and are acting normal. I don’t see any signs of an disease or anything. He had been in the tank about a year. Haven’t had a new addition in 6 months. The only thing I can come up with, is that it gored himself on a piece of pink birdsnest or something. There is a huge tear on the side of him with his flesh hanging out of it. Am I crazy for thinking that’s what happened to him? I found him when I did my water change tonight right by the birdsnest. It’s got some sharp pieces on the edge of it. @Humblefish or anybody else with a guess on how he got his demise? 3 Quote Link to comment
A.m.P
That looks like too clean an incision, you may have some kind of predator, it's possible it may have been spooked and cut itself on something but that is very deep and very, very clean. 1 Quote Link to comment

Total surprise. 6 minutes ago, Amphrites said: That looks like too clean an incision, you may have some kind of predator, it's possible it may have been spooked and cut itself on something but that is very deep and very, very clean. It was definitely deep and clean. I did see him on the left side of the tank, where he never goes. Thought that it was kind of strange when he was over there. The only fish I think could cause the damage is the longnose hawkfish with his dorsal fin, but that seems unlikely to me. I am definitely thinking he hit something. Do you think the wound caused the death though? Quote Link to comment

Humblefish
That looks like the liver hanging out him. If he punctured himself (or a critter did it) in that area and damaged his liver, he wouldn't live long afterwards. 4 Quote Link to comment
Elizabeth94
Pretty crazy. I suppose I would think he could have darted into something pointy or sharp. But at the same time I see my dart fish dive under a rock in the blink of an eye. They never get damaged by anything. However, birdsnest are really pointy. Maybe he could have been spooked at night into it. Stinks, sorry. 2 Quote Link to comment

No hitch hikers. If it was a predator I am sure my 4line and Helfrichi would go first as they are smaller than he was. Thrassian Atoll
Terrible first photo. But my Jedi mind trick monti rtn’d back in March and I had to chop off half of it. No clue why it rtn’d but I thought for sure it was going to die. Ended up saving like the size of quarter-50 cent piece. Here it is today. Looking better than ever. Little smaller than the size of my hand now. Side shot of the montis in the back. Hawkfish is 3” for reference. In other news, one of my Apex E832 took a crap on me. This one had the heater attached to it. Luckily the temp only dropped to 76 from a normal of 78.5. Even luckier, non of my pumps were attached to that one. It was mostly my lights. My wife came home and went to feed the fish and non of the lights were on. The eb832 lights on the unit come on, but it doesn’t give any power to any of the outlets. I unplugged it, reset the breaker button in the back, nothing. I went ahead and ordered a new one because I am well out of warranty. 2 Quote Link to comment
Thrassian Atoll
Also ordered 3 fish from Ora/Divers Den. Lightning Maroon Clown, Tomini Tang, Orchid Dottyback. All 3 are in the frag tank right now. The dottyback will go to the main display after a few weeks of observation of the fish. The other 2 will stay in the frag. The clown and dottyback are super tiny. The clown is maybe an inch long if that. The dottyback like a 1.5”. All fish look great though. The frag will get a few more. I am still waiting on my 3 fish from BayBridge. 3 Quote Link to comment
Thrassian Atoll
I tried to trim back the pocilipora the other day and absolutely destroyed that and the forest fire digi next to it. The poci was starting to kill the digi. I am sure they will grow back but both look terrible right now. 1 4 Quote Link to comment
