TIME FOR AN UPGRADE(EVO 12 to Reefer 170) Finally complete with FTS

Recommended Posts

Mike P

I decided to finally purchase a bigger tank and pulled the trigger on a white Red Sea reefer 170 this morning. I decided to get it from saltwateraquarium.com since you can select a freebie. I’m pretty excited and can’t wait to transfer everything out of my evo to the new tank. I still need to purchase skimmer, return pump, heater, sand, and rock. Can anyone tell me what’s the best way to transfer my sand and rock to the new tank? I want to make sure everything is done correctly so I don’t kill anything and want to start planning already

We never recommend transferring old sand without it being thoroughly washed, otherwise new sand is recommended.

I detailed my tank transfer in my journal. It's very in depth or else I'd rewrite here. You can check it out for some ideas.

Tank came after waiting all day. My dog Jasper made sure to inspect the box

I assembled the stand last night and then realize I had the back wall on backwards 🤬. Called it a night since it was late and I was mad. Took it apart this morning then reassembled it and inspected the glass, all looks good but the ATO float valve appears to be broken so I sent Redsea an email about that. Now I just have to wait and start gathering the rest of my equipment. The tank looks bigger then I thought it would and it was pretty heavy. I will say the instructions are crap.

My vectra s2 came in on Monday and my RODI system came in today. I’m tired of going to my lfs once a week, hopefully the RODI system will work out great. The vectra was smaller than I though it would be and I’m waiting on the barb attachment to come in. I hope it fits the s2 because the package says s1 and I don’t see any s2 accessories available yet. The rodi system in marine depots kleanwater advanced 6 stage and this thing is pretty big and heavy. I still need to get a protein skimmer which will be the Red Sea reefer rsk 300, sand, rock, and a heater. Red Sea is also sending me a replacement for the broken float valve for the auto top off and that should be here by Friday. I can’t wait to get this system up and running 😁

I placed a cheap $5 led light in the cabinet. The  barb attachment came in today for the vectra s2 and it fits perfectly. Has a nice tight fight so I’m not sure if I need pvc cement still. Red Sea also sent me a replacement for the auto top off float valve.D9E0F4FA-2765-4B5B-ACAB-3EFBA078B7E1.thumb.jpeg.39608371228adbdf2c02d5fcfe20f236.jpeg697DE82A-8A7C-477F-85BA-C979DE159D52.thumb.jpeg.ab705bbd93678b18823d21e513dd4720.jpegE0B22E8C-316B-4795-9F8B-9922143574C5.thumb.jpeg.91159b5a8df7660830fc28861e86072a.jpeg

RODI has now been installed. Was going to use a faucet adapter to use this in my bathroom but my faucet is a single piece with no threads. Had to resort to installing an adapter on the water line under the cabinet but ended up having to do this under the kitchen sink. This RODI is really long and would not fit in the bathroom cabinet and barely fit in the kitchen due to the garbage disposal. Had fun spraying water on my self and the floor lol. All appears to be good now and I will have to monitor for any leaks.

So far I am pretty happy with the way the rockscape turned out. The only thing left is to figure out the coral placement but I’m probably not doing that until next weekend.

Nice tank,

What type of coral is the tall white thing lower left, sort of tall.  Looks cool!

I also have a reefer 170, I am sure you will be happy with it.

That is a Blue Cespitularia that I have had for over a year. It’s more of a purple/ bluish color. Didn’t come out to well in that picture.

Heres a pic of it from May when it was in my evo, has grown a bit over the past to months

So far I have been loving my reefer 170 and am super happy with how everything is going. I do need to glue some corals on the rocks but that is one of the things I hate doing and is always messy. Few close ups of some of my corals.

I forgot to mention I added a reefer skimmer to the tank a few months ago and it’s doing good, did take a few weeks to break in. Also using the new eheim thermocontrol-e heater.
