All in ones are nice, but I'd personally just go with a standard glass tank and your own equipment to start out with.

 

A lot of people buy AIOs and end up upgrading little bits of it, piece by piece. A powerhead here, a better light there, a back chamber mod there... before long, they could've done about the same amount of work and saved money by just DIYing their own AIO, or throwing a HOB and a powerhead onto a glass tank and calling it quits. Not all AIO kits will be like that, and not everyone will want the upgrades, but be aware that a lot of AIOs aren't going to support everything you want them to out of the box.
