I got one that is supposed to be "skinny" / have a lower profile. I think it's called "Slim". It was a cheap one I figure doesn't hurt to try. Â Yes night diving you see so many different things than during the day, kinda just like our tanks. It was very cool! Yeah the Azoo one was like 12 bucks so I tried it on a whim lol. It's a good bit bigger than the Azoo Mignon 60 that's been around forever and has room for a tiny bit of media if needed. Still smaller than an AquaClear 20 by a bit too. 1 Quote Link to comment
yoshii
I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays! I spent time with family in CA, although unfortunately I was sick the whole time. Still getting over my cold, but I really want to get this tank going again. I've been waiting for a nice weekend day to go macro collecting, but it's been really windy and rainy this month. I'm going to try to see if I can go today during low tide to one or two of my previous spots. Â For my new HOB...I didn't realize it was designed so the pump was inside the tank. It's huge and ugly so I want to try a few alterations with other pumps. Or I might end up using something else. We will see! 3 Quote Link to comment
yoshii
It was windy and the waves were huge (and beautiful!). I only walked in ankle deep water but I'm covered in salt due to the wind/waves. But I was able to get to one tidepool that was safe and found a few goodies!  Need to soak the camera in FW and I'll get some pics up today 🙂 2 Quote Link to comment

I find that anything but chaeto is difficult to find at LFS in my area. Excited to see pics Quote Link to comment

The same species doesn't grow here, and I believe it's illegal to sell/have.  If you order online, reefcleaners.org and live-plants.com are both great places to get macro. They do tend to have better selection in the spring. Quote Link to comment
yoshii
I had two potential spots in mind for collecting today, both places I had been before. Wailupe Beach Park is on the south shore and has a reef offshore that protects the shoreline from waves. I drove by here on my way to the other spot, Alan Davis Beach. From the road I could see the waves were not a problem, but due to all the rain the water looked brown and gross. So I kept driving to the east "corner" of the island. Unfortunately, although the water was blue, the waves were big and it was really windy.   It was interesting to see what washed up with the big waves. There were beautiful freshly-rolled-in rocks covered in coralline and encrusting algae that looked so out of place among the black lava rock along shore. I picked 2 small pieces of remaining algae off this rock  I ventured out anyway just to see if I could find any accessible tidepools that had algae. And I found exactly one , which was one of the same pools I had collected from before. Just a few species were easy to grab in this pool, I got pieces of: - Yellow Turbinaria ornata - Amansia glomerata (red algae that grows in shadows) - Feather Caulerpa (Caulerpa sertularioides) - Hydroclathrus clathratus (brown algae that looks like a sponge) - 2-3 species of Galaxaura, need to ID them - Plating coralline!! Found it growing in a protected overhang and was able to pull a piece off really easily  Here's the plating coralline, it mostly stayed intact but some of the fragile edges broke off during transit. I kinda just threw the rest of the algae in the tank so I need to take better pics of the rest   5 3 Quote Link to comment
Christopher Marks
How is everything settling in @yoshii? Â That plating coralline algae looks really cool! Any new tide pool finds? Quote Link to comment

Any new tide pool finds? Hi CM, thanks for checking in! Most things seem to be doing good. Except my phone and laptop which both decided to stop working last week! Luckily they are fixed now.  The plating coralline is growing (I think) which is exciting! The Caulerpa doesn't like it as much though.  I think one issue I have now is heat during the day. The tank has been going through temp swings from 74 to at least 86 😱 I think it may have to do with changing the room curtains to ones that let in more light/heat, so I may switch them back to the old ones and see if that makes a difference. I need to check surf for this weekend but it should be a lot nicer than when I went out last! 3 1 Quote Link to comment
yoshii
This coralline is definitely my fav  I'm so glad (and surprised) it's actually staying alive and growing!  This little piece of Galaxaura is growing a bit too 🙂 I think this piece I plucked off the washed-up LR from my recent collection post.  Some of the Amansia (left, with coralline growing on the blades) and other additions. 9 1 Quote Link to comment

yoshii
Checked out a new spot instead of watching the game on Sunday. I had actually gone hiking nearby on Saturday and saw some potential good algae spots! Â Originally I wanted to check out any tidepools at the rocks towards the right in the pic, but there was a large homeless encampment between that area at the beach parking lot, so I went the other direction instead. Â Unfortunately I don't have pics of that area (forgot the put the SD card in my camera) but I ended up walking along the beach on the submerged rocks in about shin-to knee-high water. I found lots of cool algae! There was a lot of codium, and I found some of the only Chaeto I've seen in Hawaii (it looks like straight "regular" chaeto). I also had a curious turtle visitor and got to see some cute juvi Moorish Idols in the surf. Next time I want to keep going and check out more of the reef flat area that was a little further north. Â I had an event planned for later in the day so I just tossed the algae in the tank: 6 Quote Link to comment
yoshii
Finally arranged the new pieces in the tank and took pics with my new Olympus Tg-6 waterproof camera I was gifted, it has a very cool macro mode with 1cm focus distance! So time for a photoshoot and pic dump  My new favorite, this cotton candy Galaxaura  Amansia glomerata  Cute hermit with a really pretty shell!  This tiny Dictyota has a beautiful teal color and has been growing well. Hopefully it won't spread too fast.  This bumpy one is Laurencia majuscula  Finally found some Red Feather Algae! I think it's Portieria  Codium, one of my fav macros  Also found the only Chaeto in Hawaii, it grows in long, straight strands  And the two pieces of plating coralline are doing good! They have bits of other algae growing between the plates, but the coralline itself is growing 🙂    Another one of my favs, Turbinaria. It usually needs high light and flow so we'll see how it does in the pico  FTS, (with small pump removed)  13 6 Quote Link to comment

growsomething
That coloration is exactly what i hope to have, just one or 2 touches of green, with pink, red, purple, yellow. Beautiful. Except the dead man's fingers. It washes up in masses here after every cold front. You sure it's all going in the tank? 😉 https://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20070326/News/605206558 1 Quote Link to comment
