Was at the 99 Cent Only store the other day, found a couple things. An aquarium cling for the back of the tank that is waaaay too big, I cut off a section of just plain gradient blue. Then, inspiration struck in all of it's Janky glory, and I decided I may want to fashion an overflow out of the clear plastic that the Aquarium Cling came inside of...

So I cut it up, and in true Janky fashion, I superglued a bottom to it since I haven't bought any new silicone in 4+years

And I forgot to make sure it would fit, which it does quite well! Now I just need to play around with flow and cut some slits/teeth into it. and drill a couple holes in the base to prevent the pump from running dry. Then just messing around with it to get it to skim properly, but I can wait for all that. Maybe a magnet to get it positioned better... If anything, I have more of the plastic that the cling came in, so I can always make another one or two of these boxes when I get silicone , and play with multiple different flows/styles

So I dug up on old piece of acrylic to see if I could make a lid

And then I got out my fancy scoring tool and straight edge...

And it actually went like I was hoping...lol

Next I just have to make a cut out in it for where the AC 50 is gonna go, and put a handle on it! I couldn't really get it off the tank once I popped it on there...It sits perfectly within the recessed area made for...well... lids

With a lid on the tank, and a lid on the filter, we shall see how much evaporation I experience, but I can always cut out a notch for the ATO as well

Very cool diy's.

Did you cut the acrylic with just a knife?

Yeah, I scored it with the knife, using the back of the machete for a straight edge, and then once I got about half way through, I just bent it on the line and it breaks clean

Now, to cut out the "window" for the HOB, I'll probably use a dremel rotary tool. Just harder to get clean lines using the dremel

 A reciprocating saw will work

make sure you use a wood drill bit for the dremel

I was thinking of using the little mini grinding wheel...lol. Not a drill saw attachment, this is for the hand held dremel, so it has little flat saw blades that basically "sand" through the material

Hmm 🤔 that might work but you’re going to melt the acrylic before cutting it

saws and drill bits “chip” away the acrylic

Yup, was gonna tape up the acrylic to avoid possible "melt-splatter" when I cut it. It's pretty thin, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue

You’ll do great 👍 if you mess up it will just add to the look of the tank

LOL if I mess it up, I have enough acrylic left to make another lid or two...haha
