In 7 mins, it turns 30/3/2019 here. :ninja:

Don’t forget you gotta wait for CM to announce what you need to put in your dry tank and take a picture of. I know he stated everything will be based on US time.

Livestock list updated at front page.

This guy is definitely going into the Pico - because I've never owned nor seen a pink-legged hermit before, I think he's unique and jerkish enough to qualify to have his own tank:

My mystery critter in QT is doing okay too. I think it's fairly easy to guess what he is...but, do you know what species he is? That's the bigger question. :ninja::ninja::ninja:

I'll also be making a lid out of either acrylic (if I can find some) or plastic cut to fit.

Haha it's still the 29th here! 11:28pm

Are you planning to keep the crab? Looks like a potential baddie

Oh my! Then it looks like I'll have to wait until next morning.

Idk. I checked his claws and the edges were blunt and white. He is just picking at the sandbed right now for any fallen pellets. 🤔

Is the contest going off CM's time zone? I'm 4 hours behind

I don't know. I think it is. He still hasn't said what item we need to photograph the tank with before starting. :ninja:

Cant really tell from the photo (not sure what I'm looking at), but given few fish can stay in a sub 3 gallon tank I'm guessing some sort of goby.

Wrong species, but surprisingly close.

Tiny blenny? I don't know of any that stay small enough for a pico though.

Bingo!

Tbh, I think tiny gobies or tiny blennies are the only fish I can think of that would be alright for a pico.

I'm just now waking up at 7am, and I believe CM is two hours behind me. It's very possible the item will be announced close to @Snow_Phoenix 's bedtime!

Just woke up. So tank is still dry, but I plan on filling it up later.

I'll be out of the house from morning to afternoon, so I'll most likely get started some time in the evening. 😊

Just got home and I'm drop dead tired. I did manage to put my first layer of uncycled LS into the tank though:

It is thin, messy and uneven but I'm not too concerned because I plan on adding a second layer of LS that is currently being cycled in my QT. The total kg of LS used will be 2kg once the deed is done.

I also added a bit of RowaPhos and some activated carbon  in an unused pantyhose, tied it up and basically this will be my budget 'media bag'. The particles of the RowaPhos are extremely fine, so I tied it up in one pantyhose, then placed it in a second pantyhose full of activated carbon to reduce any chance of the media from leaking into the tank directly.

I added a layer of rolled up blue filter floss over the 'media bag' and the HOB filter compartment is now full.

The sand is wet but everything else is still dry. I'll mix up some salt later and slowly fill it up with more sand and my major LR piece. I *might add the macro today directly since I'm not expecting a big cycle or any cycle at all because I'm using cured rock. But I'll wait another few days/a week before I add my first tester frag.

Need to rest and recharge for now.

Alright. So I filled up the tank with a second round of LS and this gave me a nice, thick, aragonite sandbed of ~1.5"+.

So I filled up the tank with some freshly made SW using Fritz RPM and this happened:

Uh oh.

I rinsed my sand more than a dozen times before adding it to the tank. But apparently that wasn't good enough. So the only thing left to do was add my LR piece and wait patiently:

I checked the light and everything was working fine (phew!):

30 mins later and the water was finally beginning to clear:

1 hour later and I can see my rock! :scarry:

So now I finally have my pico reef set up!

20190331_185004.thumb.jpg.5abe164eaa086a8bfd9fe9254c2148a6.jpg

The streaks on the glass is actually dirt caused by the sand while I was filling it up. Tomorrow I will gently use my algae scraper to see if I can remove the tracks as much as possible.

My plan is simple: reef and have fun!

But seriously though, I'm planning on making this a simple tank consisting mainly of various types of shrooms - rhodactis, yumas and hairys. I'll stick some basic softies and maybe a stick or two in there as well. And of course, if there is more room, I'll bring over my zoa frags and my acans too. It'll just be mostly random pieces by the end of the day.
