Intimate Q for you @GraniteReefer,

any plans for JackO, J.Deere or 24K gold leptas?

John deer leptastrea I have, the other two are common names to leptoseris which is commonly grouped with leptastrea by accident. I do own 24k leptoseris but it won’t be in this tank.

Did you get more exotic or forgotten kind?

I got JackO but need ask my locals if they have anything interesting. 24K looks sweet tho.

How are you going to fit all those in the drop off?

6x12=72%18=4 so each coral gets 4 square inches.  Based on research it takes awhile to grow to that size from a frag, add in additional topography of the rockwork and there is probably even more square inches to cover like my tilted dropwall

Save me a frag of each  lol

That I could work with.

My own stocking is still on paper.

But %70 slow growers and few twists if my coral go to guy comes through.

Actually he's a new source as my guy is dealing with major aefw.

Are you planning on using ceramic or wood air stones?

I run no stone in my reefbowl, perhaps I will use the supplied lees air stones at first but likely revert back to nothing when I’m too lazy to maintain them

Put just one of the four light strips I have onto this tank and it illuminates it pretty well!  4 light strips sounds cooler though6CF6D49D-E884-4A93-95F5-2DF0B255E1DC.thumb.jpeg.ebd144db5fca49b8ccf82a28635ffddb.jpeg0CBA601C-18B5-4FDD-B4F9-B8783E66963F.thumb.jpeg.02a855435f5bed7c30169fb8a5b6d20a.jpegC3B8F6F2-5691-4456-8E9B-EC3B30540EDF.thumb.jpeg.8c78a731c2172a72ad4e298cadb1ad78.jpeg

I will definitely be adding the marinemix to add some white and can ramp them low for a more blue experience(most of my corals look great under both but really pop under blue)

Leptastrea Resources

This link is to the same research that was showcased in coral magazine but in a more scientific manner.

https://doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2018.00466

This is some poorly written news article about leptastrea’s ability to survive a molasses spill.  Super random but interesting.

https://www.petcha.com/leptastrea-purpurea-more-resistant-to-stressors-than-other-corals/

Basic Care Guidlines.

Towards the bottom of the last link is species specific information and it will redirect you this very helpful site

http://www.coralsoftheworld.org/species_factsheets/species_factsheet_summary/leptastrea-purpurea/

Added some info to the first post on the resources I have bookmarked about Leptastrea.

Wow! A dropoff tank with undergravel filtration, and on a pico to boot. Neat!

I have some Leptastrea nursing itself back to health that I'll be putting in my contest build too, it's got a nice yellow to the mouths, really cool genus of corals.

Love me some leptastrea 45FF8F53-6B13-45C0-938E-F5F082E2273B.thumb.jpeg.d2aefde0a37da85feb77484fa9641ad4.jpeg

just a teaser shot, a fish destined for the Dropoff may be in that critter carrier, more info on everything as it’s added!

coincindence that on the day I expect to start my Leptastrea brooding tank coral magazine emails me this article. Life is almost creepy

Very cool article!

Nice build. I feel like you could trim your walls and make a freestanding frag rack and be within rule parameters.

I think the design I have gives me the best shot at successful coral brooding so I’m sticking with that and will settle for a chance to win a shirt and some stickers.  Coral brooding>competition.  Still I will get to feel like I’m part of the comp anyways which is all that matters.

I did almost make an insert out of sawed pukani but it would have been a pain to clean and losing 1/4 of the water volume with my chosen design sounded nice!

When I added saltwater this afternoon I filled a 1 gallon jug so I could get a rough estimate of capacity.  When I fill only the upper deck from a full gallon there is this much until it hits the glass/rock crest of the Dropoff.B96FDC50-1299-46AD-B3E1-981AA8A833F0.thumb.jpeg.211d6f40779bc222e8062a3ac8344242.jpeg

the remainder of the gallon filled exactly to the crest in the lower section

Surprisingly less than half of the next gallon fit into the tank, and that’s before the seeding liverock and crushed coral are added further reducing water quantity.  Here’s what was left of the second gallon I allotted to fill the tank.125EE739-AC01-465B-8066-4C436BE2A4CB.thumb.jpeg.c8f952fc3d797f81971253bb578f8513.jpeg

I get it, but if it were free standing, it wouldn't be a wall. cut off 1/16" on each end? don't silicone it down?

Looks awesome filled!

My wife said no.

Best of luck to you. I will be following along closely.
