MainelyReefer
Last competition I did a coral a day to start for over 20 days, this time I am doing all 18 corals within the first 24hours! Call me crazy and irresponsible, but it’s going to work. Special Coral of the Day! Waiting on the frag rack in my reefer This is the Jason fox spitfire that I got from legendary corals(epic N-R sponsor). I chose to put this on the upper deck and on the top of the island. This looks best under deep blues, yet I centered it under the marine mix haha I will try updating everyday highlighting a new coral that was added from today. 4 2 Quote Link to comment
MainelyReefer
Green Banded Goby added as well. So tiny! or was that gobies? As in 3 I wasn’t going to add fish but my son loved to feed my pistol shrimp who was in the last poopico while he was brushing his teeth(pistol shrimp is in the Red Sea sump now). So I figured fish could be the new feeding experience for him. P.S. don’t worry I will be doing a soft cycle like I did last contest. 3 Quote Link to comment

MainelyReefer
I think they are conspiring against me, it does make me feel good that they all hang out, and I’ve only seen one venture to the upper deck(probably not normal to swim in 3” of water) here is a short video of them eating some flake. 9 2 Quote Link to comment
MainelyReefer
I know I’m doing a species tank, but the OG bounce booger that has slowly been growing in my reefbowl was nearly getting overrun by Zoas. So I dislodged the bounce and glued it to a small piece of liverock rubble I placed it on the lower level as I think it’s proximity to the AI Prime in the reefbowl may be the reason why it hasn’t significantly grown. 4 Quote Link to comment

Tempestas
Holy Cow!! That is a seriously good looking collection you have over there! Can't wait to see them overrun your tank. 1 1 Quote Link to comment
kimdawg
They are beautiful I can't wait to see your success in this project. Is this the best sized tank to try to reproduce them in? I don't know anything about this type of process. 1 Quote Link to comment

If you ever have a minute and are interested in reading about the subject this is my favorite resource and is what the Dropoff will be emulating https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmars.2018.00466/full they used air pump driven tanks nightly in the brooding process, and also describe using air pump driven tanks to induce settlement of the planula. I’m hoping to achieve both of those goals in this one tank. I do plan to try and find a mesh sieve of sort and strain each WC and try to collect the planula, or maybe just add them weekly to my Mantis tank which is covered in different coralline algae’s which may be viable settlement substrate. I think it will be awhile until my frags grow big enough to potentially release planula though. 5 Quote Link to comment
yoshii
Beautiful corals! And actually, I've seen tiny Leptastrea frags produce planula, so yours may be close to that size. If you look carefully you can sometimes see the planula under the surface tissue of the coral before it's released. They look like little long bumps 1 Quote Link to comment

Thanks and it’s fully stocked! Don’t tell my wife but clearly I can add another specimen or two thinking tomorrow I’ll add a few of the smallest snails from a reef cleaners shipment I got earlier this year as the slightest biofilm could be seen on the glass today and the stringy red algae that rode in from my reefer(side effect of fluconazole and vibrant) is showing up on the dry rock(good sign IMO) 4 Quote Link to comment

The polyps only exhibit this behavior for a day then return to normal on another specimen Always hard learning the cues of a new coral. 2 Quote Link to comment
yoshii
Hmm I'm not sure, I haven't looked for that sort of "behavior". Although the visible planula is actually often not see near the mouth area, I've seen them mostly towards the middle/outer edges of the polyp, but before the tentacles 1 Quote Link to comment
MainelyReefer
In order to collect planula I need a 30 micrometer plankton sieve(hard to find any help appreciated). I also need a blue flashlight and filter to illuminate the planula which contain a green fluorescent protein. Thinking a aquamaxx coraleye or Orphek azurelite might suffice and be cheaper when coupled with my aquariclip camera filter. However the scientists did mention the brand they have and it’s made for deep sea diving but I found a version with yellow filter glasses rather than a dive mask filter. Maybe once more confident on potential success of my goals I will drop the 200$ haha.
