Kimber's Contest Pico - The End of Bad Crab

😬

Bad Crab is still kicking, despite the deplorable conditions of his prison...

The heater went out sometime in mid-February, and I never got around to replacing it. The thermometer in there was registering a temperature of about 64 degrees, but after 2 weeks, since he was still alive, I just decided not to replace the heater. Crabby Pants and the amphipods seem to be doing just fine without it. 🤷‍♀️

Then 3 weeks ago, I grabbed the par bulb that was over the tank to use for my veggie seedlings. Again, Bad Crab doesn't seem to care. It's not like he was out during the day anyways!

It also seems to have helped cut down the hair algae that was growing. Though, just about all the macroalgae has died off too.

Crabby pants seems pretty hardy. I guess it's a just add water crab.

I think he's still living just to spite Kimber at this point.

Ah yes, my "I need a top-off for my freshwater tank, but I'll let Bad Crab be the guinea pig first" top off contraption!!

It's a little device from Amazon, that was only like $15 bucks. Uses a bottle (Evian, 1L size) and seems to work rather well. I'm pretty sure @This guy is extra salty recommended it before I quit the pico contest last year.

Don't tell anyone I've just been using tap to top off Bad Crab's tank... I suspect that's actually what's giving him the strength to keep living...

Does the weight of the water on the glass worry you? Seems like a nice simple device

Bad Crab probably thrives off tap water..

I saw a water bottle attachment that rests on the rim of the tank that’s a gravity fed ATO. Have you thought about that?

Ok, you actually linked me to one on ebay... But it's still the same as what I found on Amazon. 😉

Bad Crab's days really are numbered this time. I want to start a new project and his "jail" is in the way so he's got to go.

Knew you couldn’t pull the lever on him.

I guess we'll see how he does without heat or light, with tap water as top off... plus now, no flow...

Sadly, bad crab has met his maker.

He passed away sometime early this week. I saw his body floating in the jar yesterday morning, and I last checked on him Monday when I threw some pellets his way.

I estimate he was about 2 years old. I first spotted him in May of 2019, shortly after I added the black sun corals (had purchased in April, and they died a while back) to my Lagoon.

My bad crab, Redrum, has been banished to the Opae tank.  No heat, no flow, brackish water, over looking the reef where it used to live. It seems to be doing well.  It doesn't move fast enough to catch the Opae.  The Opae like climbing on its shell and keeping it algae free.

What's the salinity of a brackish tank?

I know that the water in the dog treat jar would evaporate causing salinity to rise quite a bit over the course of a few months. I'd add in water over the course of a day or two to get the salinity lowered. Never seemed to bother the crab much.

Considering how long other crabs and shrimp seem to live, I think 2 years for my bad crab was a decent length of time. Especially since I really didn't try my best to keep him in perfect conditions.
