Thanks Tigahboy... I’m having fun juicing this evo up lol.. I’m done now. Just need right return pump not to strong, not too weak.. no big deal for now.

All I need to do is some wire management, make a fresh batch of rodi water, some salt mix and throw in this piece of dry rock. A month later bing! insta reef 😂

In my quest to supplement T5 with my leds. I've benn looking at the Aquatic life hybrid fixture 24inches long by 18inch wide. I was just going to cut and Dremel holes to make it 12 inches wide. this fixture with 4 ati bulbs would cost me around $300.00 not including the $149.99 I already spent for my LED for a total of $450

I was on youtube and came across t5ho fixtures for $90-100. looking into the dimensions 23x12.5x2.5 which would be perfect to use for the evo.  I ended up getting the  Durolux - 2 FT 4 Bulbs - T5 HO Indoor Grow Light - DL8024 Fluorescent.

https://www.amazon.com/Durolux-Indoor-DL8024-Fluorescent-Fixture/dp/B01F82M8YA/ref=sr_1_13?crid=O1V7EI9KOZDG&keywords=durolux+t5+grow+light&qid=1552589657&s=gateway&sprefix=durolux%2Caps%2C128&sr=8-13

this fixture is only $63..... 🤑 with bulbs I will be less than 150 for everything.

I plan on removing hammer tone reflector along with bulbs. I will relocate two middle t5 sockets closer to edges to make room for the LED fixture that is 4.75 inches wide and mount it in the middle. Then cut holes on top of fixture for the fans.  Spray paint fixture black, add reflectors back in, mount led, add ati bulbs, mount sanded plexiglass to defuse led light, add fans and I should have an amazing LED/T5 fixture for less than 300 dollars and it will sit flush onto of evo.  😎   in theory this is how it will go down, ill receive the fixture on Tuesday from amazon. Cant wait to start this project.

I love the fact that my T5/LED hybrid diy fixture fits flush with the  Fluval EVO. There is an 1" in the back for wires to come out of tank and for some ventilation its perfect.

Was going to Spray paint it satin black, but now I'm digging the stainless steel look.

Holy crap @748S911, that's an epic T5 LED hybrid light!!! That T5 grow light is a serious bargain, what a find! I was really impressed with the light before the T5 came into the picture, wow. How did the tank temperature hold up after running everything at 100%?

Are you worried about bumping it into your tank? I'm anxious watching it balance up top there 😄

Thanks Chris,

Where there's a will there's a way....lol!

Just when I thought it couldn't get any better than a 149.99 led with all the bells and whistles for a fraction of the price.  I come across this quality T5 fixture, the German hammer-tone reflector is quality stuff the whole fixture really, plus its for use in dry or damp areas... which is a huge plus for 63 bucks.

This light fixture will grow everything and fast!! really had fun modding it out.  63 bucks plus 149.00 for led and essentially your done. (oh and you need a Dremel) no wire cutting or electrical work (love that)  Super easy mod

Heat wise the tank hit 81 today at 5 hours on still testing temps times to dial in my T5 light times through the day. Keep in mind that I have 4 pumps running in tank.  2 micro pumps, upgraded return pump Jebao FA 1000 and the Ice cap gyre plus an oversized ebo jaeger 75 watt heater all running in there at same time.   I'll keep it simple and prob only run them 4 hours total to keep heat down until I get the CSXC-1 chiller.  Then prob run T5's 5-7 hours throughout the day to max out growth and color.

The light stays put I have a fish mesh frame that it sits on flush to tank. I could put small clear plastic reinforcing clip guides used for glass tops to secure fixture on there to ensure it won't budge.

Im planning a monster tank 120"x48"x30" build in the future and will use same lighting set up with 2 or 4 (depends how many I need) 4 foot fixtures with 6 bulbs and 8 led lights refitted in the 4 fixtures (all daisy chained together)  all that would cost less than 1500 bucks plus 24 tubes under $2000 to light a 10 foot tank. Raidons are $700 each so I will save a ton of money on my lighting needs....  but that's whole nother story for down the road. lol

Here is the tank pics today at 12 noon led  at 100%

The T5's addition really brightens things up a ton.

(My ATI bulbs blue plus and coral plus aren't in yet, so using cheapo 6500k's tubes that came with fixture for now)

I'm sure the 6500k t5 will grow coral just as good if not faster as any other T5 but I gotta have the corals looking good with 15k+ bulbs.

Insanely bright haha! Scaling the idea up for a 10' tank is perfect, what a bargain! How far away is this 'monster tank' anyways? 😄

Oh I forgot to mention, you can now upload your photos directly to the community when making a post, if you don't want to bother with the old Photobucket method. Just click or tap on 'choose files' at the bottom of the editor, even from a smartphone.

I need shades sitting at my desk.  lol

hopefully by next year I start building.  Got the quotes from Miracles already on tank last august, sold my 300 gallon (running) in November, and my empty 400 gallon.  Hating life not having a big tank...lol

Nice build! Thanks for posting so many details on the mods to the T5 fixture. I've looked at the fixture for a future build but I was worried about how it would hold up in a SW envirnoment. Any concerns now that you've seen it up close and had it all apart? This could be a nice DIY project for many different LED retrofits.

Thanks teenyreef! The fixture is holding up great so far.  No issues with the salt water enviroment yet but I will have to give it some more time.  The fixture was easy to work on and a quality product.

Just figured out how to do that today.  It's so easy now!  And no more busted photo links.

And no more photobucket watermarks @748S911.  You're dating yourself, man!

Updates,

Not much going on here, on reef maturing mode.

Got two little chromis that are not staying. getting a pair of black percs.  I have 1 red starfish, 2 red leg, and 3 blue leg hermits.  3 turbo snails, 2 margaritas, 2 cerith snails, 2 bumble bee snails, and 2 larger snails not sure what they are tho.  They are keeping the tank super clean.  For frags, I have 2 Kenya trees, gorgonia, rasta zoa's , and red zoa's. Tank is in ugly phase and just have everything everywhere.  Waiting to start growing coraline to add more coral.

Looking good!  Looks like you added some live rock. Is the original piece still in there too?

Thanks,

I swapped the old one and put it in my pico I just set up.  I really like this petco rock.  Its a nice piece with plenty of potential for adding coral on it.
