I apparently just added two fish that seem to have got the "ich" in my newly redone Evo. Freshly cycled and all again so seems like I have to trash everything and start over....again.

I read through your story over the past couple days and I'm right there with you at your low. I feel the same pain you do right now. I just can't win

Get used to that feeling, because it never goes away for long. Even some of the most experienced people on here will appear one day and say they came home from work and the tank crashed, or you looked at it wrong, or you added just the one wrong thing. You have to adopt something like a carpe diem attitude about it eventually, within reason. My tanks are for the most part all rolling, with surprisingly the 5g being the most stable and needing the least amount of babysitting. I struggle most with the 120g, which should be the opposite, but maybe it’s because I fuss over it the most. And then this last week, leaving my hard work in the hands of someone who meant well but has never cared as much as me, nor take it as seriously, and it came back to bite me in the butt. And expensively.

I’ve tried using quarantine more than once, and it does not work for me. And truly the thing that has meant the most to overall survival of stuff has been stability and maturity of the system. I’ve got to replace all the fish my interim tank babysitter killed and it’s going to take a bit during this time of Covid Holidays. So yeah, sometimes it feels like you have to start again frequently.

I went through your whole thread and noticed you have a dosing set up but I didn't see you post anything about your set up. I have yet to see one of these on a Fuval Evo

Did I miss that anywhere?

I haven’t included a picture of it, but its mentioned in the every six month run downs on set up. It’s a cheap jebao 3 channel doser, hooked to a 3 chamber marine color (amazon) acrylic dosing chamber, and I run it into the third (return) chamber of the Evo. Doses two part and magnesium, now in the form of Brightwell Reef Code A and B and Magnesion.

Can you share a quick pic? I'm thinking of setting up a doser (Jebao) for my nano, but I've never used an auto-doser before, so I'm not even sure where to start with it. 😕

I’ll make it a point to get pics of it tomorrow. Tank lights are off so it makes that area too dark now.

Honestly the super-small water volume is wonderful because you can always just do an easy 50-100% WC and not worry about much of anything, the extra fussing just goes so much further in nano-tanks (provided you don't go overboard), big tanks can feel like you're putting endless effort into something actively rolling off a cliff.

I'm with Humblefish on the QT though, it's just worth it, if you have settle for dips or tank transfers, or treat mildly/gently then so-be-it, but at least having the time to observe the fish separate from everything else is worth it.

The Jebao dosers I've heard can be quite unreliable with how much they actually pump, but I've also heard you can get around that by just running them on a timer instead of trying to program them. All hearsay though.

I have a Jebao doser.  While I understand they certainly lack quality control, you can (and should) re-calibrate with some amount of scheduled frequency.

So this is one of the benefits of testing water chemistry weekly for me. If something is off I go adjust the doser a smidge. It’s hasn’t been a problem and I have a four channel doser on my 120g. Again no problems. I guess you could say I somewhat calibrate them weekly, but I’m not down for hard core calibrating a machine and adding another chore to my already long list.

As in my other thread, moving to monthly updates, because with the tanks all settling in, there’s not that much to say 🤷🏻‍♀️

The Evo, as always, is doing so well and filling in so nicely-it’s crazy to remember how these tanks all started off empty and just rock and sand.

Someday maybe Billy and Dilly will have a clutch of eggs, but at the moment at least, they are a good pair and make the tank so active with their goniopora and now Nirvana zoa hosting selves. Billy HATES the toothbrush-every time I get in there to brush at algae he goes nuts and starts attacking it. Little bugger hits hard too, and he about ripped it out of my hand biting the bristles the other day. Unfortunately of late there’s been some briopsis popping up and red algae that looks suspiciously like cyano sometimes. It shows up on the back wall and back glass where the flow isn’t blasting it, but is easy to brush away. However, just seeing the toothbrush sends Billy off the edge.

There’s been a new addition to the tank- unfortunately this tank suffered a loss while I was in the hospital and the pumps remained off. Due to the cold and low oxygen environment, Evinrude the TSB died, which was a huge bummer. He seemed like he’d have been a very large personality in there had he lived. Thankfully Billy and Dilly, and Interceptor all lived, though Interceptor had looked super rough for a while though. We were super relieved when he perked back up. But, with the loss of Evinrude, I got a new Tanaka’s Possum Wrasse. Meet Wally the Wrasse

Otherwise, I decided to trim the Kenya tree in the 120g and add a couple of sprigs to the Evo, as well as the hairy green shrooms in the Challenge Tank. They all look super mad at the moment but maybe they’ll perk up and help fill in the Evo even more.

Oh and I forgot, I added a new bumble bee shrimp to this tank as well.

Wally is adorable!

Thanks! He’s just this week started being brave enough to come to the front glass and make eye contact. He’s actually a very big possum wrasse with quite a belly. Hope that doesn’t mean he’s already old.

January Update: Nothing much to say. Christmas brought me a new wave pump which proved to be WAY too much for this tank, so I ended up buying a Hygger 1600 GPH wave maker which is working really well. Small enough to move it behind the rocks under the outflow nozzles so it's not seen anymore, and yet still makes flow for the front of the tank. Pleased with this one.

The fish are all getting along which is a relief-sometimes Billy and Dilly seem like they're trying to get their groove on and slightly more territorial, but they've taken to hosting both the goniopora and the nirvana zoas and pretty much leave the mandarin and the possum wrasse alone. I see Wally the wrasse zoom by every few minutes or so, and he hides behind corals to spy on you when you're near the tank.

Only coral issues is the green frogspawn which I think was damaged by the too powerful wave pump I tried. Not sure I'll be able to pull out a win with it. ☹️

I'd be willing to settle for weekly gratification, and would consider negotiating for monthly as a compromise.

I run that same wavemaker in my Evo. Have you messed around with the different settings for different times of the day? Or did you just set the time and leave it be?

I’ve played and played with it. I found a setting I liked and have just let it run.
