ECLS Reefer

Been having some issues with the rocks leeching phosphates so have put a bag of phosguard in to help. Other than that, this tank has been running really well. Have the ATO up and running and changed

over to a power strip from that stupid battery backup I was trying save money with by using. It sucks- just use power strips!

So, after being gone a whole week from my tanks, I returned home to everything looking awesome because of my AMAZING tank sitter!! Only thing of concern was Dr Weir, who looked to either have seriously molted or died. And the condy who was strategically playing dead next to the torch, where he’s definitely not supposed to hang out. So this morning- find Mr Condy inflated ALLLL in the torches business who’s understandably pissed and maybe a bit stung. Snatch Mr Condy back up to his perch, scold him along the way. (Bad Condy!!!!)

Noticed Dr Weir IS alive and kicking (yay!!!!!!!). Everybody in the tank looking great!

Water parameters test day and water change day! Changed out the phosguard since the level is still wanting to sit around  0.5. Nitrates after a week were back to 25. I’ve consistently had lower ph on this tank sitting around 7.4-7.6 and I’m not sure why.

I am running this tank with only bioballs, some de* nitrate and matrix (to use the stores I have), and Phosguard.

There is filter floss in the first overflow chamber to catch crap, the matrix and de*nitrate. I’m trying to grow cheato and pods in the second chamber, with a light and a heater in there. Third chamber has the return pump, bioballs and phosguard.

The tank gets a weekly dose of MB7 and I’ve been changing water, taking off about 3-4g twice a week for the last few weeks. There is an ATO that returns RODI water. I don’t chase the ph and everybody seems fairly happy in there, but I’m never sure why it stays low. The alk stays pretty solid at 9-10. I had tried dosing mag and iodine but it’s been a pain to keep up with. Will revisit that in the future.

Otherwise this tank has been behaving very well since it’s new reincarnation.

Also bear in mind I’ve been converting my testing kits over to salifert slowly, so some of the levels changed as the kits got better.

Tank is looking great- the torch is especially happy and full looking today. Been tweaking the wavepump angle and settings today and it seems to like the different flow patterns.

Forgot to mention I found the long lost, assumed dead rhodactis today!! He’s living in a hole in a rock. Looked okay too.

So, testing day today. Dosed with RF 2 today in hopes to restore KH to same levels as what it is when fresh mixed, so around 11 since I'm using Red Sea Coral Pro salt. After seeing the results and all the education yesterday on my other thread, decided not to do water change, and will try to hold off until Friday for all tanks.

First graph is parameters only for July and starting August

Second graph is parameters and dosing with water changes. I always test the water before doing a water change, so the levels will always be higher before the change.

New chalice in tank, for the back to school splurge. Dr Weir looking frisky and the two lazy bums of the tank— The Brain the strawberry crab and Emmy the emerald.

I apologize for the photo dumps, I can’t help it. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Added a new Guttata goby, a small coco worm and some GSP today. The coco worm is looking good, but the GSP has so far been shy about extending polyps. The goby is still creeping about getting used to the tank.

Went ahead and did the water change today rather than tomorrow. Need to be studious tomorrow rather than a hobbyist. Did a really heavy sand bed siphon because I've been noticing a lot of chaff rising when the sand is disturbed at all. Got SO MUCH out today. Also removed the old bag of de*nitrate as part of my slow media removal program. Now down to a bag of matrix that can come out next week and just phosguard with cheato and bio cubes. Hopefully this will be a good working plan as I have no NPS corals in the tank or special fish. Did happen to find a GINORMOUS flat worm on my torch coral today-guess that's why it was staying mostly closed all day. May consider getting a wrasse of some type. Previously had a six line in here way back and really enjoyed him. We shall see.

New GSP colony finally all opened up.

This guy who hasn't a name yet did not appreciate my sand bed siphoning today, but ended up finding his way into the Randall's pistol shrimp's tunnels. I expect to start seeing shenanigans ensue in the Evo soon.

Got in the new royal/tuxedo urchin today from BlueZoo. He's pretty cute, blue and white. Also got in a new medium sized cleaner shrimp, and took a longer approach to acclimating him this time. Really hoping this time around I can manage to keep this shrimp healthy.

Changed out the phosguard and put in the InTank Media basket as there's room now. Levels were pretty good following the water change and super siphoning yesterday. No dosing today required.

New cleaner shrimp. First thing he did was attack and eat a half snail (not sure what it's called, but had no shell)

FTS 8/16/19. Am still moving some stuff around because the chalice is extra stingy at night. It especially likes to pick on the Duncan polyp, so keep having to move it around to protect it. Torch is not as happy as normal because of the giant flatworm I found on it last night and promptly scraped the crap out of. Finished scraping today. Hope I dont have a huge outbreak of the things.

Phosguard proving why bringing *down* phosphates *slowly* and *consistently* is infinitely better than nuking it with GFO and hitting 0 in 48 hours lol, hope your flatworms don't become an issue and thanks for all the photo's to sort through.

Sorry about the photos 😬 I like having evidence to compare. I'm trying to get the tanks to a once a week kind of effort.

Ate a stomatella snail, huh? Must've been hungry - I've also seen cleaners meticulously remove all the bristles off of small bristle worms until they could get to the edible parts. Tank's looking great!

So mad today. It would appear that I need to give Spot and Dot new names. I think I’m gonna name them Dillinger and Frechette. This murdering pair keep killing every new fish I put in the tank that doesn’t run for cover after dark. Just heartbreaking and infuriating. The new Guttata goby was doing so well, paired with the pistol too, but of course, after a couple days it was dead. Water parameters perfect, so it’s not dirty water killing them or lack of food. I guess in the future I’ll have to take them out before putting any new fish in.

Also, I’ve named the urchin Lurch the Urchin. He’s chillin along, more like a small moving trash pile, as everything seems to stick to him...

Speaking of water-- the water got super cloudy after I did the big sand siphon Thursday and won't clear up. I just noticed in doing my tank book keeping that the phos dropped from 1 to 0.1 according to my numbers, which is crazy. I feed the tank like nuts, but I changed where the phosguard sits in the tank. I guess it wasn't actually getting flow before. I assume the cloudiness is some form of precipitate?

If you run filter floss to polish the water then at this point it actually might be a bacterial bloom from kicking up muck.

Yeah I do have a small square of floss in the media chamber. I change it fairly frequently though because it gets so mucky. But I’ll just keep working at it. Hopefully it’ll clear up soon

Battling Dillinger and Frechette today - snatched them up, then changed up their scape, then put a new couple in there, then put the murdering pair back in after the new dudes had a while to get their legs under them.

Jerks better not hurt these new ones. Of course, the blenny is living up to his horns at the moment....
