Clownfish Hosting Elegance Coral?

Recommended Posts

My clownfish started hosting my elegance coral tonight. I didn’t know clownfish would take to elegance corals. Pic is below, typical clownfish hosting behavior. Nuzzling, pivoting back and forth, and biting almost half swallowing each tentacle gently and spitting it out. Very cool behavior, I’m just concerned about the future health of the coral. And the fish obviously as well.

I don’t have any clownfish hosting experience, can you folks give me an idea of what kind of behavior to look out for? The EC seems to not mind at all, it’s as if the fish isn’t even there. I’ve seen it shrivel up for passing hermits before, this is all very strange and cool at the same time.

As long as the elegance doesn't get closed up too much, it will be fine. Clowns do get pretty rough with corals they host after a while, keep an eye on the EC's health.

While that coral is very small in comparison to the clownfish, since you haven't noticed a change in it's behavior, it may turn out fine. Just keep an eye on it, as elegance don't tend to respond well to trauma and can go downhill quickly.

Edit: was beaten to it.

I had a small male clown kill a goniopora from loving it too much. It was a pretty big goni as the skeleton was the size of a tennis ball and the clown was maybe an inch at that point. He then switched to a clam which didn’t mind him at all. Now he has a rose bubble tip. The female took both of my big rainbow bubble tips for her own at night but does allow him over in the day time. They are interesting fish to watch.

Lost my elegance to a hosting female. Loved it to death if you would call it at that. Did the same thing as yours is doing but the elegance instantly closed up but the clown would not stop. About a week later it was gone
