Upgrade alert: the AquaMaxx Coral-Eye 5W CREE Blue LED Flashlight just came out with the perfect light for this thing. I believe you can get the hanging wire mount or gooseneck version as an option. :happydance:omgomgomg

As a flashlight enthusiast, I am 100% certain that light isn't some rebranded cheap 5w flashlight that can readily be found on Chinese internet sites for $5. Because if the one thing flashlight enthusiasts are after, it's the ability to grow corals. 🙂

I'm thinking of taking the plunge on one of these (well, not really a plunge, more like dipping a toe in).

My main question about this tank is the light. Outside of the official site, all the listings I can find on this tank are for the white light rather than the blue one. Are most of you using the blue light or the white one? And either way, do you think this a decent light for its intended purpose (growing easy corals in less than a gallon)?

I'm using the blue light, and for the most part I am satisfied. Color is fine for what I have and my ricordeas and GSP are growing and look good. The only down side of the light is that it has three intensities. When on a timer when it turns on it is default to lowest setting. Not a huge deal as I've had it be on low for a few weeks when away from work and no ill effects.

that's from 4 years ago, doubt they are around anymore.

sump door says www.acry-lux.com but the site doesn't exist.

What are people doing for heat? Is the heat off the pump enough to keep you in the right range?

I'm also reading about the fixture- anyone figured out full brightness with a timer.

Im using the stock heater with no issues. keeps it right around 78-80. I don't think there is a easy work around with the light. However I have seen no ill effects on corals having the lowest setting for 2.5 weeks.

Yeah i can't find it separately - i see the aliexpress listing has a version with the heater for $47. If i can get confirmation on the LED color (blue leds or all white) i'll be ordering.

In terms of the light, i'm going to pull it apart and probe it with a meter. I assume it just runs on higher voltage for the higher setting - might be able to just wire it up with a variable PSU or tear apart a USB cable if it's fed off the 5V.

So, I joined the saltwater hobby Christmas 2018 after a long break from the freshwater hobby.

I just recently joined the mini complete tank club and set mine up. However, I set it up next to my Fluval spec 1 that has a small custom diy led on it. While the mini tank light looks ok by itself, I just couldn’t stand the blaring difference and decided the mini needed a little custom light too. The light appears more blue in the pics because they were taken with an iPhone.

The light is dimmable, features 2 luxeon 3-up led stars. Colors include 2 royal blue, 1 cool blue, 2 neutral white, and 1 hyperviolet.

A timer is not built in but I’ll use a simple plug in timer for it.

The spec 1 light next door only has 3 total luxeon leds compared to the 6 on this bad boy. Even at 30-50% it is very bright.

If anyone wants more details and/or a part list let me know.

And I’d love to know the thoughts of more experienced nano reefers

I got the idea and basic build instructions from another old post here on nano-reed complete with video:

https://www.nano-reef.com/forums/topic/386760-cheap-25-diy-led-for-mixed-reef-picos-refugiums/

Then I found the parts and applied them to the mini tank:

Parts List:

Power supply:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J8CG86G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1             $8.98

Dimmer: SODIAL(R) PWM Dimming Controller for LED Lights, Ribbon, Strip, 12 - 24 Volt (12V - 24V) 8 Amp, (https://www.amazon.com/BestLED-Dimming-Controller-Lights-Ribbon/dp/B00H8KTXNU/ref=pd_cp_60_2?pd_rd_w=ZDw5G&pf_rd_p=ef4dc990-a9ca-4945-ae0b-f8d549198ed6&pf_rd_r=4XQVE6F87G7RKDYBHZ6V&pd_rd_r=4a518e6e-5426-11e9-a577-3bbfcd35dc51&pd_rd_wg=HJ0Mw&pd_rd_i=B00H8KTXNU&psc=1&refRID=4XQVE6F87G7RKDYBHZ6V), $4.24 (free shipping)

Driver: PART #: LDD-350LW, 350 mA (https://www.ledsupply.com/led-drivers/mean-well-ldd-l-series-cc-step-down-mode) $4.49 (free shipping)

LEDs purchased from https://www.stevesleds.com/

part # 8794102448 3-up Tristar - Connected Wiring (Series) (https://www.stevesleds.com/3-up-Tristar--Connected-Wiring-Series_p_207.html)
LED Color #1: Royal Blue
LED Color #2: Cool Blue
LED Color #3: 5,000K Neutral White (full spectrum)

$9.99 x 1
$9.99

part # tricombo (https://www.stevesleds.com/3-up-Tristar--Separate-wiring--Hyper-Violet-Combo_p_274.html)

3-up Tristar - Separate wiring - Hyper Violet Combo
LED Color #1: Royal Blue
LED Color #2: 5,000K Neutral White (full spectrum)
LED Color #3: Hyper Violet 4.0

$10.99 x 1
$10.99

 (shipping $4 or less)

Heat Sink: Ebay item # 301826793021, HQ 101x50x13mm Heat Sink Top Mount - Black (https://www.ebay.com/itm/HQ-101x50x13mm-Heat-Sink-Top-Mount-Black/301826793021?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649) $8.22 including shipping

You will also need an old cell phone or other assorted charger, that wire will connect from the dimmer to the leds, and thermal adhesive. Not a really cheap project at about $50, but it's around 18 watts  (if you want to cook your corals), full spectrum, and a perfect fit for the tank. And you can build it in about an hour 🤣

While this heat sink is a perfect size I don't really care for the fact that the holes aren't centered, because if they were I might raise the light a litter higher above the tank, like my other builds

ha that feels like so much overkill for such a tiny tank.

A bit more than i can justify anyway.

I'm still waiting on my tank, and unsure if i'll get a marine or freshwater light fixture. Would you sell yours if i end up getting a 10K/freshwater fixture?

I'm hoping to bypass the level controller to let it function with a timer.

I hear you, but when you can wake up and go to sleep with out turning on or off your tank and having moonlights, dawn, dusk settings, and full all around control on your phone, to me its worth it.

I suppose I should mention, the only reason I didn’t mind spending on this custom light is because I found the tank on aliexpress thanks to this thread, and got it for $34 shipped. But sadly the blue light wasn’t an option.

One could easily make the light a lot more affordable by just using 3 of Steve’s leds 3 watt leds that are 99 cents each- I made a spec light out of those leds and the coral doesn’t mind the cheaper light lol

Ah, fair. I ordered through there with the heater and I assume I'll be getting the FW version of the LED.

Well my tank was delivered today! Would anyone be willing to sell their stock light with blue LEDs? I think there were a few people that upgraded.

Also, anyone having issues with the heating? mine seems to dip a few degrees over night into the mid-lower 70s.

Stock include:

Yuma

Tiny kenya tree

other blue/brown mushroom.

I've got a couple zoas on a piece of rubble i might throw in. I eventually want to get zoas on the right.

Once i get my dimmer i can put together my light for the tank too. get rid of this ugly yellow hue. haven't busted out the multimeter but i'm sure i could bypass the low voltage setting on the light at start.
