dling
Is there a difference between tank reared clams vs caught wild ones ? In size, color, health ect. Quote Link to comment
RayWhisperer
Wild collected usually come in significantly larger. Like 4 or more inches. Beyond that, you wont have any difference between wild, or farmed. I can't speak about health issues. I've only had farmed clams. I've known 3 people with wild clams. All 3 of those were healthy. Whatever that is worth. Quote Link to comment
dling
So theres no difference in the over all size of the farm raised ? They are expected to grow to be the same size as the ones brought from the ocean ? Quote Link to comment
RayWhisperer
As far as I'm aware. They are still T. crocea, or T. maxima. Genetically they are identical (with minor variances) to wild clams. There would be no reason they would reach a smaller maximum size than a wild individual. Quote Link to comment
dling
Thanks. Thats what I needed too know. I want a maxima because of the vivid colors but my tank is only 3 feet long. The clam to tank ratio would be ugly. Mostly for the clam. Quote Link to comment
