Minimalist Cube Build

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

My name is Matt, I live in beautiful Charleston, SC. This is my third build and the largest tank I’ve owned to date. I’ve been a fan of this forum since I started in this hobby in 2015 and felt like it was the best place to document my new build!

So here we go. Picked up a rimless 50g SCA in August from a friend who was upsizing and finally got it up and running on 8/25/18. Wanted to go for a minimalist scape with some decent negative space for the corals to eventually grow into. I plan on doing a mixed reef with a decent amount of SPS and since I’m totally mesmerized by movement I’ll be loading up on Euphyllia. I feel like torches and hammers bring drama to an aquascape but also really like the contrast of encrusting corals like cyphastra and of course the colorful Acros branching all over.. With any luck and probably a ton of help from the NR community I’m hoping to make that vision a reality.

Stats:

Tank: SCA rimless 50g Starfire Glass

Light: EcoTech XR-15W G4 Pro

Skimmer: Reef Octopus 110S

Liverock: BRS Reef Saver

Sand: Caribsea Fiji Pink

Salt: Brightwell NeoMarine

ATO: IceCap

Doser: Jebao

iPhone photos don’t really show as much depth from the front as there is in person but you get the idea.

Thats it for now, I plan to start updating this thread weekly.

Cheers!

I appreciate the kind words from everyone! I don’t entirely know what I’m doing as far as aquascaping but after staring at the empty tank for what seemed like an hour, I just decided to wing it. 🤷‍♂️

I forgot to mention that I used hydraulic cement to adhere the rocks together aside from a few that have a friction fit and let me tell you, there is no way I’d aquascape again without it. Super easy to use and it cures in minutes. Only downside is that the smallest size i was blue to find is actually a small bucket of it which I would never be able to go through in a lifetime of tank setups.

So I ended up pulling a Rick out of my old Nuvo 20 that has a bunch of acans all over it to set out as an island in that open sandbed area. Here is a photo that most closely resembles the way that tank is currently laid out. Don Taylor mind the diatom bloom in that photo 😉

The only problem with bringing that rock into the new system was the copious amount of vermetid snails that ended up coming over on that one rock. Here are a couple shots of some acans that are on the island.

Here you can see the exposed skeleton from part of this colony that got beat up by the vermetid slime. But you can see the new growth since I destroyed the ones in that area.

Thats it it for now, I’ll get some better pictures together to show everything in its current state as well as a current list of corals and fish etc.

Cheers!
