SnakesAndTanks
I've tried before to get into the hobby previously and I either had an unexpected move or I tried when I was too young,16, and couldn't financially do it. Now I'm in my forever home with a very stable job and looking to start a nano reef. I found a setup I thought would be good starting grounds for me and would like your guys' input. What do you all think? And how much do you think would be reasonable to pay? - Sicce Suncra Silent 1.5 pump- EcoTech Marine VORTECH MP10WQD QUIETDRIVE PROPELLER PUMP- Refractometer- Kessil H80 TUNA FLORA REFUGIUM LED light- Kessil A160WE TUNA BLUE LED LIGHT- 100W Cobalt Aquatics NEO-THERM SUBMERSIBLE HEATER- Kessil H-SERIES SPECTRAL CONTROLLER- Several testing kits- Air pump for airstones- Tunze OSMOLATOR NANO 3152 AUTO TOP OFF- 5 gallon ATO water reservoir- dry food- net- containment box- MagFloat glass cleaner- Stainless Steel Razor-blade glass cleaner arm- PVC plumbing Also included would be a very nice looking square 20 gallon tank and a MarineLand sump with all hardware with a nice stand They guy selling it seems like he took great care of all his stuff even the way he stored it after he took the tank down. im not against buying and paying for new price but if I can save a buck with some very nice gently used equipment I would love that. 1 Quote Link to comment
ReefGoat
My first question for the guy would be how long the Led lights were ran and what intensity. Second would be how long and what power he ran the MP10. Everything else is relatively low cost as far as this hobby goes. So those are the big ticket items. Used items for this hobby should go nowhere near what new items should. Because of all the dust and just general salt residue that creeps into the nooks and crannies of those lights. Everything you see there brand new would probably be a little over a thousand bucks. So go from there depending on the wear and tear Quote Link to comment
SnakesAndTanks
@ReefGoat Thanks for the reply. I asked him those same questions but forgot to mention in my original post. He said the lights were ran very low intensity for a year and the MP10 he just said wasn't used to it's full potential for also a year. He's asking $550 for everything including a RODI unit I'm just not sure if that's a fair deal on my end or if I should just pick up this brand new in box 32gal LED biocubr for $200 1 Quote Link to comment
SnakesAndTanks
I have the day off work today luckily so I was going to go pick up one of two tanks. The one listed in the original post or a brand new in box 32g led biocube for $200. Which would you guys recommend? The bio cube is an hour away and the one listed about in the original post is 2 hours away Quote Link to comment
ReefGoat
550 seems like a fair deal if he's truthful about what he said on the lights and the vortech. Depending on what Rodi unit that's a very fair deal Quote Link to comment
ReefGoat
I mean my RODI alone was 200 then you got the ATO and container you'd have to buy if you got the biocube. Is the 550 one a 20 gallon long? That's one concern because if it is then one single a160 is going to leave alot to be desired coverage wise. Quote Link to comment
SnakesAndTanks
@ReefGoat 17in cube aquarium Quote Link to comment
ReefGoat
One thing that you have to think about is how much money you're willing to sink into said tank. Because if you get the biocube you're likely going to eventually have to buy most of the other stuff that comes with the other one. Not all of it but a lot of it. Of course you don't have buy that caliber of equipment and there's always cheaper stuff. But it's still going to cost money and likely more money than the 350 you'll save buying the biocube Yeah the 160 Kessil will do just fine in that tank you posted the picture of Quote Link to comment
dandelion
If I were you I’d buy a new heater. I see heaters as consumables which I replace every year. No point saving $10 bucks buying used and risk all your livestock. 1 Quote Link to comment
SnakesAndTanks
@ReefGoat that's all I was pretty much looking for man. Thanks a lot. I really don't mind spending the money but I felt like that bundle deal was too good to pass up on. I'd prefer to have nicer equipment and it seems like the $550 bundle has that covered and comes with just about everything I could need 1 Quote Link to comment
Clown79
550 for all that is a really good price. Just the pump, lights, and rodi would cost that or more. I would ask to test the pump in a bucket of water to ensure it works and test the lights to make sure they work. Look the tank over thoroughly. Make sure the seams are all solid, no splitting, bubbles, or frays. 1 Quote Link to comment

SnakesAndTanks
@ReefGoat @Clown79 update on the light and pump. I misunderstood his text before. Here's exactly what he said. The light was on 8 hours a day. It started at 10% ramped up to 50% at 4 hours then ramped down again about 2 years. The pump I had for a little over a year I think. It was ran on its lowest setting except when I would clean the tank I turned it up just a little, Quote Link to comment
ReefGoat
That's pretty normal usage in my opinion nothing hardcore. Maybe even what one would consider medium to light usage. 1 1 Quote Link to comment
Clown79
That's normal usage. Most led's are good for 50,000 hrs and run at 12hrs a day that's a life of 11yrs. 1 Quote Link to comment
SnakesAndTanks
@Clown79 @ReefGoat I just picked up the $550 option! Im quite over whelmed as I've never really had a nicer system or one with a sump so I definitely have a lot to learn. I have a few questions if you guys don't mind. I think I did this to the sump tank during transportation. Will it be a problem? If so is there a way to fix it? It's that sought crack at the top of it. Quote Link to comment
SnakesAndTanks
Also have no clue how to set the sump up as of right now so I have some videos to watch and post to read. And with the ATO I have a question. Does it matter how I insert these? I don't see it labled any way. Quote Link to comment
Clown79
I wish i could help you but I myself have never run a sump system or ato. Maybe start a thread on the subject so you get more help on this particular issue 1 Quote Link to comment
SnakesAndTanks
Thank you. I'm figuring it out slowly but surely. It was all pretty over whelming when I was looking at everything in pieces in boxes but it's starting to come together 21 minutes ago, Clown79 said: I wish i could help you but I myself have never run a sump system or ato. ReefGoat
For the ATO there's no one specific way to put those wires in just make sure they're in there good Quote Link to comment
ReefGoat
For your sump crack you're talking about I can't really tell from that picture how bad the Crack is or where it's at. The most intimidating thing about a sumped tank is just filling it up and doing the power shut off test to make sure that it won't overflow the sump in the event of a power outage Quote Link to comment
Coastie
If the sump is a standard AGA (all glass aquariums - the plain aquariums at Petco/PetSmart). I'd just buy a new one. A sump failure could cause quite the headache.... And wet floors. Quote Link to comment
