Clownfish are quite bold when established. My favorite are maroon clowns. Same with tangs, rabbitfish, and butterflyfish (though too small for your tank).

A very unique addition would be a dwarf lionfish, such as a fu manchu or fuzzy dwarf. However, as I learnt from other on this forum, they will eat what can fit in their mouths.

In your experience, what fish species that doesn't hide most of the time behind the rocks? small fish that are suitable for 40 ish gallon tank

Clowns, flasher wrasses, yellow wrasse, damsels, most dottybacks, chromis, fang blennys, neon gobys, firefish (once acclimated as long as they are not being picked on), royal gramma, dwarf angelfish (may pick at corals).... ect.
