It is rare any employee is well verses in saltwater aquaria. There is specific training for it. 

 

Any petco can submit a special order to any approved vendor, including ORA, with regional approval from their animal care manager.

Well I am pretty sure Petco receives what the companion animal director orders, I mean I know that for reptiles and small animals. So I assume it is the same for aquatics. What is POS? I am sort of confused.

I used to. I was a general manager in district 77 in Florida. My store had the best saltwater presentation in the state for years.

Wow awesome. I honestly wonder why Petco sells saltwater fish sometimes. I mean I went through all the computer training and there is hardly any mention of saltwater unless you became an aquatic specialist. I would love to run those sumps and take care of the fish.

It’s the department the incurs the most losses so I am not sure if they ahould carry sw either TBH. Petco does love their animals tho and I admire their efforts.  Yet working there over 10 years, I learned the margin they made and how it sets us apart from other big box pet retailers is why they think it’s worth keeping.   

 

Volunteer to do more training in aquatics and help out there. Aquatic specialtists have the hardest department out of all of them and were often next in line candidates for in house promotions in my store. If your store has opportunities for improvements there you can help change things.

 

That department is typically closely monitor by regional managers and any significant changes would be noticed.  Takes time tho.

Yeah my manager told me my store breaks even on saltwater. I thought we would be losing money honestly. 

 

I will be sure to do that. My GM knows I am quite fond of fish, so hopefully soon I will have a chance.

I live in Australia and we dont have petco. really glad bout that. my lfs is really good. never seen any sick or dead fish there. bought everything from there (except for a chaeto ball from another hobbyist). tanks (reef) been up 4 months without problems.

Not all petcos have challenges.  some staff really do know what they are talking about and do the best they can.  they have stiff competition around here in Tampa, FL though...have a dozen LFS around us.
