banasophia
The sinularia was wilted last night (it often does that), but it perked up really fast when I did my water change using (store bought) distilled water (mixed with Reef Crystals)... need to figure out how to use my new distiller and make my own water this week for next weekend’s water change. 4 Quote Link to comment

I had one ever so briefly and it produced tons of waste water and seemed like it would be a big pain keeping track and replacing the filters... plus I just like to be different... and try new gadgets like Weikel said haha Sooooo. TDS of 4 for the first run... I think it may be from carbon dust from the brand new activated carbon packet... didn’t say to rinse it first and the manual mentioned there could be some dust at first. I’ll take it out and run another gallon. Quite a bit of residue left behind in the base. 2 Quote Link to comment
banasophia
What a nice morning... woke up and went to check out the distiller first, of course, to see how my new toy worked, but then I went to scope out the tanks and discovered two interesting things. First of all, it looks like I now have twin cleaner shrimp cuz my shrimp molted and the molt is stuck to the back wall haha: And, apparently it was time to frag my macro... a piece broke off and settled in a new spot and it looked like my tank decided to accessorize. If you look closely at the last pic you can see the emerald bellied up to the new macro bar and is pretty happy with the situation: 2 1 Quote Link to comment
banasophia
Update on the distiller: I removed the activated carbon sachet from the dispensing spout and then ran a brand new gallon of tap water through the distiller. The distilled water came out with 0 TDS. I’m thinking the 4 TDS I got before was probably dust from the carbon, or possibly just some dust or something in the distiller since it was brand new and that was the first gallon produced... I’ll keep you posted on the results for the next few gallons. 3 Quote Link to comment

banasophia
The blue sympodium really stood out to me last night... wish I’d gotten a macro shot of it before my photobombing shrimp walked all over it 😂 3 Quote Link to comment
banasophia
Annnd gallon 4 - 0 TDS... seems pretty consistent and I’ve started using the water for top offs in the Nuvo 10. I may add the activated carbon sachet back into the spout now that I know I’m getting 0 without it. I think there’s a chance there’s a very minuscule amount of VOCs remaining in the distilled water produced, like .001 PPM TDS, if there are compounds in the tap water that evaporate and condense at nearly the same temp as H2O... and I think the activated carbon can help with that... need to read up on it a little more. 1 Quote Link to comment

Daniel91
Is your emerald and porcelain in the same tank? What’s your experience with them? I am buying either - leaning to porce to stay in my anemone since my clowns prefer my torch... 1 Quote Link to comment

I am buying either - leaning to porce to stay in my anemone since my clowns prefer my torch... The porcelain crab is new, but it’s getting along well with everyone else so far. It seems it’s not as photogenic as the emeralds cuz it doesn’t really photograph well under blues or the Biocube “beauty lights”... but it looks very pretty in pics under the white lights. They are filter feeders, and really fascinating to watch when they feed... I got mine last weekend after watching the the one in my LFS’s display tank. Emeralds, in my opinion, are a good choice since they can be very effective as clean up crew... I really love mine... if I could only have one crab it would be an emerald. 1 Quote Link to comment
Daniel91
Well, I guess a hairy emerald it is 😄 1 Quote Link to comment
banasophia
Decided I should show the Nuvo 10 a little love too, but speaking of emeralds, I need to order one of those emeralds that are guaranteed to eat bubble algae from Reef Cleaners, cuz the two emeralds in my Nuvo really aren’t doing their job. The Nuvo is pretty overrun with bubble algae, hydroids, and stomatella snails right now. Quote Link to comment

I used to target feed mine some meaty food every night to keep them from eating the polyps on my pipe organ corals, but that hasn’t been an issue for a couple months now and I no longer target feed them. banasophia
Yayyy!!! My prints showed up this evening and they came out really nice... they’re printed on canvas. My favorite is the framed one. My home office is gonna look so snazzy! I was seriously considering getting a wall mounted tank for the office, but I decided it would be an additional commitment for maintenance that I just don’t have time for right now, so we’re going with pics in there instead. 2 1 Quote Link to comment
