Bought a tank the other day and I would like to confirm a couple corals that came woth the tank.

I believe the top is a hammer?  The owner said frogspawn but it looks differently shaped than my other one. The second and fourth I have no idea on and the third is a candy cane?

thanks

1. Does look like branching frogspawn at the moment, usually hanmer will have anvil shaped polyps.

2. Acropora (typically placed higher and in higher flow [looks on btm to me])

3. Candy cane

4. Montipora...maybe jedi mind trick

1 looks like a Frogspawn to me as well.

2 looks like a Eunicea Sp. Gorgonian. Likely a Knobby Sea Rod

3 Candy Cane Coral

4 Looks like a Monti to me as well

I think top pic is a hammer. I agree with the rest.

1 Frogspawn (tips look anvil shape, but has multiple tips on each polyp like frogspawn and lacks the classic rose shape of a hammer)

2 Some sort of gorg

Rest you've got

Here is a little better picture of the one in question. It moves some with the current and isn’t completely stiff.  The other two I am posting as well I assume are acropora

It’s a hammer. What do you think a polyp is exactly?

Lol, awesome, ty I am relatively newer to keeping sps, what are other possibilities?

@Yumarattler whatever 2 is, it’s pretty lol.

The first one I can see it possibly being a frogspawn or hammer, not sure yet, the polyp tips could be mishaped cause stress...does it have multiple polyp tips on the ends or just a single big one on each—hard to tell.

The monti is a spongodes, see the branching part near the back?  Unique to spongodes.  Very hardy, a nice monti.  The second is a gorgonian, I had one that looked almost identical.  One of the easier ones to take care of and a fast grower IMO.

If you're new to SPS all I can say is I hope you have two part ready and are testing Alk on a regular basis.  This is usually where people discover that acros need super stable parameters, especially in a newer tank, or they will die quickly.

The bottom acro looks to be a valida of some sort, one of the more rugged acros.  No idea on the top one.

It’s definitely a gorgonian. And I’ll stick by my story, that other one is a hammer.

Single tips on the euphillia which is why I thought hammer. I am starting to test and chart and do have two part that came with it and a dp-4 dosing pump.

Bottom line...

this is a hammer (from OP)

This is a frogspawn (also from OP)

and FYI an euphillia polyp has probably 20-30 tentacles. In the photos above are probably  2 polyps each.

Euphilia can be kind of ambiguous when it comes to tentacle shape (torches can look like frogspawn, hammers can look like torches, etc.. Only true way to tell is looking at the skeleton. 2nd coral is definitely a gorgonian, octocorallia since it has eight tentacles per polyp. Make sure to feed that tank with something either directed at filter feeders or that has a range of micron sizes; maybe you can ask the previous owner what they fed since it seems to have worked and the gorgonian grew

Hammers come with different tips. Not all have the "hammer head" shape

It looks like a hammer to me

It's a euphyllia (frogpsawn, hammers, torch)

hammers & frogspawn can be kept next to each other and have pretty much the same needs.

Gorgonian

Candy cane

Montipora

Acro's

With so many lps and sps you will definitely need to monitor alk for a week to determine daily consumption and then start dosing.

Ok bill nye. That’s a misshapen hammer. Maybe a new variant, ball peen hammer?

@specore

I gave up worrying about which was which.

So many different types of tips, colours, structure.

Just stick with branching because they are far easier.

Sounds good. I will be testing daily if I have time before work or at the least every other day and trend it. Do you guys prefer 2 part or kalkwasser?

Top is gorgonian.

Lower 2 are acroporas.
