falcooo
Lately, I've been using alkalinity (via Hannah checker) as my go-to measurement to make sure everything is okay. Mainly because of how easy it is and even though a nano reef requires a good bit of work, I try my best to keep things rather simple. Also, I test in between water changes. Today however, I tested everything I have a test kit for... dKh - 9.0 Ca - 420 Mg - 1200 Salinity - 1.025 *Water Changes performed every 5 days. I replace filter floss and phosphate removal media the day after each water change. This is the lowest I have seen the Magnesium level, and understanding the importance of maintaining proper Mg, I would like to buy a Mg supplement and figure out a dosing schedule. What products do you all use for dosing Mg? And which ones might be best for smaller tanks (10g) compared to larger tanks? Thanks! Quote Link to comment
luckie1966
It's more about keeping it stable then chasing a number and from my understanding 1200 is spot on. Ca , Alk, and mg are all tied together meaning one effects other. I Use Sea Chems Fusion part One and part Two and cheapest salt lol and I have great growth in my corals. Two parts are just easier too use. 1 1 Quote Link to comment

Looks like I'll continue to leave well enough alone and keep up with my regular maintance. Quote Link to comment
seabass
A magnesium level of 1200 is probably acceptable, but I'd consider it on the low side. It could just be your salt mix. You might want to test a newly mixed batch to confirm. Luckily, magnesium stability isn't as important as alkalinity (or even calcium) stability. However, low magnesium levels make it more possible for either alkalinity or calcium to precipitate. Should you decide to dose, anybody's magnesium supplement would be fine. Adjusting magnesium once a week is fine, no need for daily dosing. Quote Link to comment
Clown79
1200 is the lower end of mag. Mag becomes an issue when the levels are below normal. Low mag can cause imbalance in alk and ca. Your alk and ca seem fine. Stability is more important than striving to hit a particular number(unless your numbers are low) Your salt may be mixing low. Do you use Reef Crystals- its notorious for having low mag. I used to use Esv bionic mag. Great product when I used it. Quote Link to comment
