Clam coloration

Recommended Posts

I got a 6" derasa sitting 2 feet below the surface on my sand bed. Only had it for about 3 weeks. The color on it is kind of bland imo, and I wanted to know if it can change with different lighting. The orange just looks a little dull.  The pictures are when it is half open, fully open it looks a bit more orange.20180514_201551.thumb.jpg.87bafe504f29b36407b9c5e83d493bc2.jpg20180514_201601.thumb.jpg.ec25ada6c7ddb9d7c76187af133e7d5e.jpg

Coral compulsion cc120. It's kind of an old fixture, but the leds are still working fine on it. I run blues at 100 and whites at 75.

Also here is a more realistic picture of the clam.

Also my coral beauty is a real a**hole and is constantly nipping the mantle. It isn't taking bites out of it, but it makes the clam close up a lot, especially around feeding time for the clam and the corals. Shold I take the coral beauty out of the tank?

Yes. The stress could lead to the clams demise.

I’d go for flushing the fish as the clam would prolly clog to toilet.

Tangs are pickers too.

Things have went from bad to worse. I noticed a tear in the mantle where the shells go together last night. The clam did not seem too bothered by this however. It opened up fully and I thought it was going to grow back. I woke up this morning and found three of my nassarius snails eating the clam while it is still alive. I took them out and quarentined my clam in a plastic box (with holes) inside my tank to keep the snails out. Do you think the clam can make it?

If they were eating it, that means it was dead or dying.

Any pics?

I can post pics when I get home, but my brother is at home and told me that its mantle is fully out right now, it responds quickly to shadows, and there is little change to the dead part.

That’s good news.

If you see in the pics, one part of the mantle is dead. The intake valve on it is also kind of gaping.

Clam is looking better. Started out as a thread about how to get better colors to my clam dying. I don't care about how colorful it is now, I'm just happy it is alive.

Clams are not as colorful if not viewed from the top... That is normal.

I’ve noticed my chowder looks quite bleached when viewed from above. Still tastes awesome in a sourdough bowl though.

Little update on the derasa. Took out the cage and I'm putting more algae in the clip for the coral beauty which has been working so far. The mantle is healed up mostly, there are still 2 small folds in it but they are not as pronounced as before.

Before/after dosing Iodine. 👌👍20180628_193503.thumb.jpg.5d6f5a74329dc4fb159eb71fe663c2f8.jpg

Couldn't get the exact lighting I had in the first pic, but the color is noticably different. Also my phone can't capture just how orange it is now.

Sold it with my old setup. It was about 7" at the end and colored up very well. I hope it's doing well too.
