AlmightyJoshaeus
Hello all! I am in the finishing stages of preparing for getting dwarf seahorses, which I am planning on purchasing at the start of June. However, I wanted your thoughts...will I be successful with them? (SUCCESS being defined as the seahorses living a year or more and breeding successfully). My tank is a 3 gallon macroalgae tank at 72 degrees, currently being treated for hydroids (no definite signs of any in the tank, but just in case...). I am feeding about a third of a teaspoon of selcon enriched bbs daily and doing twice weekly 1 gallon water changes. Thanks for your thoughts 1 Quote Link to comment
RIP Sebastian
I don't know much about this, but I bet @vlangel does. Quote Link to comment
vlangel
Hi Almightyjoshaeus, it sounds like you have a real good plan. The one thing I would change is I would use Dan's Feed instead of Selcon. Selcon is apt to breed bacteria in their gut. I lost H erectus fry when I used Selcon and when I switched to Dan's Feed I stopped losing them. 2 Quote Link to comment
vlangel
2018-05-05_08-33-24 by Dawn Gilson, on Flickr You can buy Dan's Feed from Seahorse Source. Dan, the owner is extremely helpful when dealing with seahorse issues as well. Quote Link to comment
vlangel
O yeah, you should know that I have greater seahorses. I have never tried dwarf seahorses because the hatching and enriching live food daily is more rigorous than I thought that I could commit to. Quote Link to comment
AlmightyJoshaeus
Thanks I will use up this bottle of selcon and then switch to the Dan's feed. PS...any way to mix the stuff without a blender? Quote Link to comment
vlangel
Actually Dan's Feed is somewhat coarse and for bbs to get the most from it, it is put in a magic bullet and mixed with phytoplankton. Quote Link to comment
AlmightyJoshaeus
? What's a magic bullet? 1 Quote Link to comment

AlmightyJoshaeus
Can I store pre-mixed Dan's feed for a couple days in the fridge? Quote Link to comment
1891Bro
If you hadn’t added a maybe option I think the results would be more disappointing Quote Link to comment

AlmightyJoshaeus
I altered my plan slightly...I will also be feeding a little under 1/4 tsp at night to supplement the 1/3rd tsp enriched bbs I feed in the morning, and buffing WC's to 3 times a week. Will that improve my odds at all? 1 Quote Link to comment

vlangel
More WCs will definitely help with water quality and that is a big part of seahorses keeping. Quote Link to comment
