If anyone is curious, this is what you are gonna need to start your own phyto-mini-farm: •container (I like this 1.5 cheap dosing container • phytoplankton to start your own culture •food for phytoplankton • cheap light • cheap air pump BTW, frag tank is wet and running. I’ll post detail equipment and setup later. Here are few pics: Impressive setup! What are you using the Phyto for? 1 Quote Link to comment

For one, it’s a great source of food for your corals and copepods population. Second, it helps with algae control. It the essence, it outcompetes nuisance algae for nutrients. It has been working out for me quite well. Just have to be careful with dosing. I feed about 5ml per day. Quote Link to comment

Never seen a UV Sterilzer on a IM 14. May I ask the role of that as well? 1 Quote Link to comment

Yeah, that’s what you will find on this or other forums like this (But I love NR and it’s community best). Most fascinating are different ways that fellow members manage to keep their reef tanks and have them thrive. Poof, that there are many ways to skin the cat. 1 Quote Link to comment

JK lol I’ve researched up sterilizers but haven’t found anything helpful about them. I’m just a complete noob when it comes to them lol. What I know is that it kills anything living in the water column but that about it. 1 Quote Link to comment

Lol It is a new product from IM for AIO desktop tanks. I really want to try it. Julian Sprung, Mike Palleta used it with some success. The trick is the moderate use. You don’t want to run it 24/7. What it does? Well, helps with free-floating algae and parasites. There are pros and cons to using one but I am willing to give it a try. I’m not using it now as my frag tank is probably going thru mini-cycle but once it is at 100%, it will be on for 12hrs per day and 12hrs off line. Quote Link to comment
Nano Nano Boo Boo
Yeah from what I’ve read the basic premise is they kill particles in the water that other mechanics media may miss. 1 Quote Link to comment

See @Nano Nano Boo Boo I bet you didn’t know that IM made a UV sterilizer for AIO’s. I would try it 100%. They wouldn’t make the product if it didn’t work and had no purpose. 1 Quote Link to comment

Trick is to keep the low flow thru UV section in order for it to be effective. It won’t hurt beneficial bacteria population as most of it is in LR,LS and other surfaces. Copepods should be safe as well. They are not really free-floaters. Quote Link to comment
KW NANOREEF
Another issue with them is that thy would kill any free floating pods and good bacteria in your tank, but they reproduce like crazy so it shouldn’t be a huge issue Oh lol I typed it up before you responded 1 Quote Link to comment

Like I said. There is no way, you’re going to wipe out beneficial bacteria or pods population with UV light. Some will get caught by it but most will be unharmed. You cant get all free floating parasites or algae cells with UV sterilizer but it does help. Just now, Nano Nano Boo Boo said: I’ll save my money for shrooms! Lol That too. 1 Quote Link to comment
