Just wondering what all you used to cycle and how long it took to cycle

Yo @BJG!

Cycling on the tank began on March 30th

I used 10lb of each live  black sand and purple dry rock to cycle the tank, with no lights over tank. I had thought ten lb was good bcs it was a ten gal tank, however I only have about 7 gals of water volume (0.5 more thanks to the universal surface skimmer). So I have since taken my sand to about 4-5lb so it is about 1.5 inches thick. I have about 7 lbs of live rock in the tank but maybe another 1lb with the magnet rocks (not sure how to determine their weight).

I took my water to my LFS for testing On April 10 and it was ready to go, so I added crabs and got some algae pellets for em to munch on.

On April 21 I added my first Coral (frogspawn) after the water tested perfect and my light came in the mail.

May 2nd I added the clowns that made me want to get back in the hobby after years away. I waited so long on the fish because I went on a vacation and wanted to be sure i was able to monitor them.

Here's my tunze 9001 install!

Unboxed the skimmer and took out the filter floss i ordered/use

.IMG_1196.thumb.JPG.96b66548f91221a19827b1d84792b3fe.JPG

Had bsi Ic-gel that I used to attach the magnet to the side of the skimmer both times haha.

IMG_0792.thumb.JPG.0ffefabac79da500faf8c4fdf0a699f6.JPG

Time #1 where I put the magnet on the skimmer directly, had to remove as the skimmer and magnet did not fit in the back.

Time 2 that worked!

I took off the gray piece that was holding the magnet to the skimmer with the pliers and then sanded it down with a knife. Upon re-gluing I used q-tips to clean the excess ic-glu from the unit. IMG_0386.thumb.JPG.0c53629b2f14ccd065e6bc8d8b4919d2.JPG

Lastly the skimmer install and bubbles after a few hours. The unit is sitting about a 1/4 inch below the ~ water level line so it higher out of the water.

I did have to move my light till the 3155 tunze ato comes and can switch out the hydrofoil ti . The light will be on the left side of the tank till then...had it on the right and the return was hitting the rms sending water over the side of the tank oops.

Dang just checked and 3155 won’t be here till 4/2 instead of 3/30....booooooo for the faster ship dang.

Contacted BRS about shipping and it’s gonna the 3155 is  going to be here tomorrow yay!

Update on skimmer: there was a pretty good amount of micro bubbles upon installation and I mean a good amount.

There Is still a handful coming out but it is no where near where it was yesterday. Skim wise the skim isn’t a lot yet but it does have some good chunks in it. Tea colored but is already pulling stuff out.

Unit it is super quiet I cannot hear it at all. Also I’ve seen some concerns  about the difficulty in taking out the collection cup or taking off the top of the unit. I found that there is a little lip for you to easily lift both parts.

I think I just got a steal from Tongs in HB! This piece was in their 39.99 frag section and immediately caught my attention. I asked to move the piece closer for better viewing (Don't be afraid to ask anything as you can see the whole piece before taking it home!). After seeing the specs on it immediately said ill take  it. The gent who was helping me walked over to the manager and asked if the piece was marked correctly. It was not marked correctly  she told us and said I have a very good eye and upheld the 39.99 price! Super stoked on the shrommie as I've been waiting for the right one to take home! Will acclimate and take pictures when opened.

Here’s the skim from the Tunze 9001. Using it at a 1/4 inch under the ~. Tea colored skim and it’s very silent. Still having a bit of micro bubbles but it’s only been a week. Overall glad to be using it since it’s pulling stuff out I couldn’t through just WC alone.

New tank mates! Pom Pom crab and anemone crab(likes the mp10)...went with them both as the anemone crab is a filter feeder and the Pom Pom a sweeper,  but both aren’t going to steal food from Corals....I saw a nassarius snails taking from from the lower acans booooo8FD00EC0-E431-4CB0-9704-ADD02B649488.thumb.png.384f15ab62df94c10d6f2e923d52ee05.png

Did change this to 21% max intensity, was noticing exponential algae growth, the light was running at about 24% on its way to the 30 I wanted. However I have taken the max intensity to 20% total and right now it’s running at about 15 percent with 3 weeks left on the acclimator mode of 6 weeks. Also changed the time in from 1:30pm-1:30am.

Ordered some more of these splitters from inTank to further split up the filter flosses. I got 4 since of them since I have a back up caddy and another caddy for the 25 soon to come. Rn I use 1 split on the top shelf of the caddy and want to use another 1-2 for the bottom floss and  Chemipure...they only had a limited quantity so get em!

Tank Stats as of Last night: (usually only test alk and sal but decided to do mg too since I added three things last week)

77.9 F/ 8.3 dKH / 1395mag / 1.024 sal

added 0.5 ml part A, 1.0 ml part B, 0.5 ml part C

I was cleaning the glass last night and the flipper nano decided to come apart and launched into the red/green grafted monti cap and of course the metal side hit it...didn't damage it too much but still hurt it ?.

Sunburtsgrafted monti and blastos are nice and open. I'll try to upload pics of it later tonight as it is dope!

4/25/18

Fed 1 drop phtyopheast live and a pinch of reef roads after testing P04@ 0.003 (Hanna ULT)

1.025 sal / 8.1 dKH trying to get back to 8.5-8.6 range slowly.

added 0.75ml a/ 1.0 ml b / 0.75 ml c

doing a 1 gal water change tomorrow and ill figure out exactly the dKH and try to match it more accurately as I've been lazy and as soon as I get it to 8.5 I do a WC and it drops to 7.9 range. I use Red Sea salt ,not the pro version so ill have to add part b to match dKH.

Close up coming!Waiting on MacBook Pro to arrive so I can download the pics lol! Here's an iPhone shot! The anemone crab has since moved from his perch on the powerhead after being moved around enough by the snails trying to get the algae on the glass haha! Yay for me as he has taken housing un the Acan glass side which is perfect for now. However im not sure whats up with the acan.

New 2.5 lb rock for scolys+blasto to compensate for when the sand is fully out....talked with LFS and they said something in the sand might be eating the acans so  hoping to get the sand out sooner than later.....clean up crew will be way different and might have to take back the walking dendro.

Finally got to the back section, first off started by going to my LFS to see if they had an equipment to break the glass (false bottom) so the tunes could sit lower and get the dead space under there gone. They were very helpful and let me borrow this tool in order to score the glass to break.IMG_4299.thumb.JPG.c7e7ff820c9c2f9a0223f9c53d68e99c.JPG

looked up a video on youtube on how to use it properly and scored the glass on the sides and across the front (was slanted)  to make sure that there was still a part of the glass for the media rack to sit on as I did not want to create one later.

I then disassembled the backside of the tank and cleaned all equipment and began scoring.

After scoring I began to break the glass...but it would not come out. I reverted to my handy dandy knife to help the sides break a little easier and whuala, it came apart. IMG_4510.thumb.JPG.2bdf82d2864cbd94c51708298d887585.JPGIMG_9341.thumb.JPG.b53970eff9b8899784497bce4778b64f.JPG

after pulling the glass out I then sucked out all the water with a small hose and then filled it back up and emptied it again to get all debris. I then paper toweled the backside to get any fragments left in the backside and then started putting stuff back.

heres my inTank media rack layout as of now and tunze 9001 skim

IMG_0532.thumb.JPG.5054c2723e92426ef02b093c33d6b229.JPGIMG_2380.thumb.JPG.5ffbf1fc0b19fbb651a5e9e916cec270.JPG

lastly the backside finished...I tried putting the radion above the skimmer but it would have made the water volume in the back barley above the second sicce. this will allow me to install the surface skimmer at any depth. So I will keep the radion on the left side until I can figure out how to mount above. I am going to take out the sand tonight after the tank settles down a bit. I was able to FINALLY install the tunze 3155 on here which should help the skimmer stay more stable as the Innovative Marine ATO sensors went the best but held up a year.

Very nice setup. The GIANT clamp on the Radion is what caused me to go with the Kessil. I just couldn't fit everything I wanted and get the Radion to fit. I thought about doing what you by side mounting it but I pulled the trigger and settled for the Kessil.

Ugh I know it all worked fine till I wanted to run a tunze 9001 on here and the radion clamp was too big smh. Thanks man looking forward to yours getting stocked up!

I had even considered making my own arm out of some flat stock and coating it black to match. Basically taking a fairly long piece maybe like 2" wide by 1/8" thick and recruiting  some of my industrious friends with welding and torch equipment and having them put a very clean 90 degree bend in it for the light to mount to by drilling a hole in it and using the hardware from the original arm. Then taking the long non bent end and drilling holes in it to mount directly to my stand in the back. But just ended up getting a different light LOL. Also if you decide to go this route for any reason there are some people on Etsy that sell these shelf brackets that are already bent and come in various sizes. Then all you'd need is a drill to drill the holes and attatch it to a straight piece of flat stock from your local lowes and maybe a hacksaw to cut the end off it that's bent up. Once you coated it black and ran your wires on it. It would look legit

Woah that looks and sounds pretty sweet but I don't really want to modify the light as its under warranty but thanks man for the info! When its out of warranty I would def consider that

I'm currently thinking I might just find a piece of board and screw it into the back of my current stand. Then have the arm just clamp onto the board and extend the RMS out all the way, as I pulled it as close in as I could for side mounting

That's a great idea too. Paint the board black and it'll look fresh!! That's what I'd do on second thought. good point about the warranty as removing it from the arm may void it.

Lol it literally took me till right before I typed it to think of that! the brackets made me think of that idea so thank you!
