Here comes @spectra who is categorically against posting pics on his thread... then straight out of nowhere drops the people’s elbow on us, showing everybody what growth really means. Neither he nor y’all know this, but for the next contest I’m going to pull some shenanigans and bankroll his entry only to laugh all the way to the back when he beats everyone including me. That plan is brilliant because it’s half cheating, half arbitrage, 100% fool proof!! Well if I would have posted pics last weekend............ tank has been neglected...........my ALK line popped off and well had a giant chunk of you know what in the sump........still havent checked ALK hell who checks parameters anyway..................things look good. I love zoas they grow well for me although I did lose a few due to the ALK issue..........but hey I think there is one polyp left so will see how it goes..........and no not the one pictured above............ 1 Quote Link to comment
teenyreef
I'm with @spectra, my uttter chaos have grown nicely from the original three polyps: But I'd up for growing more for the contest One of the things I liked about the selection of upscales microlados is that it was a coral that isn't on most people's short list, so it was a good chance to try a coral that I've not seen too often in other people's tanks. It would be nice to pick a zoa like that too. @Cultivated Reef, any chance you can get some of the old classic vice zoas? They've gotten really hard to find since Aquascapers stopped selling them. I have a few but I've never fragged them. 4 Quote Link to comment

mitten_reef
Here’s all I have for zoas collection, plus a few more. Utter Chaos and Blondies are from @Cultivated Reef, also from CR, but missing in this pic, is CR's Midnight Sun. The SPS are also from @Cultivated Reef, Leng Sy cap and BoP (what's left of my colony crash). The 2 big Rasta frags are going to a friendly LFS this wknd. Definitely missing scrambled egg 2 Quote Link to comment
Tamberav
I would be down for the next contest... Especially the classics.... I already had a frag of this SPS so just been watching this thread. More people might be tempted to try zoas though. Teeny I been watching out for you to sell more frags so I can get in on that :p 2 Quote Link to comment

They are not as fast growing for me as some of the other zoos. With that said I do have a source for Miami Vice from a wholesaler that offers aqucultured coral but they are not as nice as your and mine. At least they do not look it in the picture. 2 Quote Link to comment

The PC rainbow will have a greenish base that will transition over to a mustard yellow base as it settles in and if it's getting enough light. Blast it with more light and the body goes full red/purple and you lose the rainbow effect. It also branches out like a stag. The ORA red planet carries the green base unless it gets blasted with light and then it goes full red/pink. Red planet tables out as it gets larger. OK, this is good to know! I forgot which was which, but it's clear the other acro by the pink bird is procoral rainbow, the tallest branch is solid red and the base transitions from green to gold toward the tips. On 9/30/2018 at 7:35 PM, teenyreef said: Oh yeah, and here's the picture. As you can see, there has been a real improvement this month. For the first time ever, my frag has grown! And it's by a full millimeter! Final height is 20mm for a grand total of 2mm from the original 18mm height! Eat that, @Cannedfish! In your face! In thinking about the differences in conditions between my tank and @Cannedfish, I think the biggest difference may be flow. After upgrading the stock pump in my IM10, my setup is nearly the same as his IM10 including the circulation pump and the wave pump. And I can tell you that I have way way way more flow in my IM40, with two MP-10's running at close to 100% most of the time, than there is in the IM10. Corals that grow in higher flow tend to grow thicker, and will encrust more before going vertical. Corals in lower flow have longer, thinner branches. While our tanks are different in many ways, I think the amount and quality of light is comparable, as are the overall tank conditions, judging from the overall health of the corals in both tanks. So next time there's a growout contest, I'll have to remember that less flow == taller corals. Congratulations @Cannedfish you've done an incredible job in this contest. But am I the only one savoring the delicious irony that after you get your free corals, you won't have any room left in your tank for them? I finally had a minute to measure my coral; since it was able to encrust down, total height is 2.3 cm from 1.7 cm. It grew very similar to yours - lots of encrusting and almost no vertical. I think you're right about amount of flow being the main influencer here. Mine is getting blasted by the return pump. Even the german blue digitata weed won't grow out into that flow. I think my coral is getting more light than yours or cannedfish's, not sure how much that plays into growth though. Before I announce the winner I would like to thank all of you for participating in this first grow out contest here on nano reef. I was very pleased to be asked to sponsor this event and I do appreciate all the good folks that make up this online community. Nano Reef was one of my very first online forums that I signed up to sponsor and I have never regretted it. Thank you @Nola Bear and @Christopher Marks for this experience. But most importantly thanks be to all of you who participated. Alright so enough of that, lets get to it! The winner of Upscales Microclados Acro Grow-Out Contest is ................................... @Cannedfish! @Polarcollision and @teenyreef were also forces to be reckoned with but did fall a bit short. So I'm going to give both of you a $25 gift card to be used at your leisure while Cannedfish will get the big pot of $150. If the three of you could email me at sales@cultivatedreef.com I will generate the gift cards and email them out. Holly Congrats @Cannedfish!! It's pretty clear no one else even came close to your results - well deserved! And since I got you all to use mm, I hope you enjoy your 971 Krones. See how they both appear larger?? 😉 A big thank you to @Cultivated Reef, @Nola Bear, and @Christopher Marks for hosting the contest! And thank you for the gift card! That is a nice surprise, and I'm sure it will be waaaaayyyy to easy to find a beautiful coral at your site to spend it on. On 10/3/2018 at 12:32 PM, Christopher Marks said: Congratulations @Cannedfish! Quite an impressive run, with impressive growth, branching, scary bleaching, and an amazing recovery, all in 6 months time! 👏👏👏 As I consider some possibilities for our next frag grow-out contest, I thought now would be a good time to get some feedback from participants in this one. I'd love your feedback and ideas for what to do next. I was thinking it might be fun to choose zoanthids for the next run, where everyone starts with similar 1 or 2 polyp frags, and we count new polyp growth for a winner. Let me know what you think! Suggest particular coral morphs too, if you have any in mind, just be sure they're not too rare 🤑 ZOAs!! Super tempting to join in for another contest. I already have a thriving utter chaos colony and would pass if that were chosen (limited real estate), but if there's another classic option that would be amazing. Rastas/fruitloops, blue agave/seduction, electric oompa loompa, miami vice, red hornet, or your god of war paly would entice me to play again. 3 Quote Link to comment
Ebn
Slowing down on its encrustation at the four month mark. The lower nubs on the right has fused together as it grows into the water column where the flow is stronger. It's also offshooting from the sides of the main branches. It definitely needs to grow outwards before the RR pink cadillac shades it. 1 Quote Link to comment

Long ago, my very first coral order included some pink and blue zoas from the then-called Coral Morphologic, I don't think they were even called Vice zoas back then but I loved them and lost them. Nowadays I wonder if rogue hermits ate them or something lol. I do remember the peppermint shrimp I got for aiptasia ripping their skirts off... Quote Link to comment
