Nelson
I think it is just air pressure within the bottle being lower than atmospheric pressure resulting in equilibrium in hydraulic head and no flow. When air enters pressure Ptank=Pbottle=1atm, making hydraulic head in bottle higher Quote Link to comment
Nelson
First coral today. So far so good, only my phytoplankton culture crashed and not sure what was the reason for this. My salinity is 1.021. Is that too low? Thanks for viewing 3 Quote Link to comment

Thanks for viewing I have found all cultures crash much easier than tanks. Its probably the bacterial count in them and lack of biological filter that makes it easy for them to crash. I couldn't keep a rotifer culture going to save my life! 1 Quote Link to comment
Nelson
Hey there, I think I made my first beginner mistake today. Looking at the happy hammer I suddenly saw a bristle worm like this one hiding in one of the holes of the porous base of the hammer coral. I decided to close the hole with pattex cyanoacrylate glue (green circle) the coral is still stressed. Now I think it was way better to dip it. Did I do something stupid? Quote Link to comment
JBM
TBH, you should have left it be. Bristle worms arent bad Quote Link to comment

Tamberav
Bristle worms are good guys, you probably have plenty of them hidden in there cleaning up debris. 1 Quote Link to comment
Nelson
Monday there were 4 mouths, now there are 6 and it is busy with number 7. Is it normal to split like crazy? Tentacles are not extented during the day btw. Thanks for the advice on the worm. Will leave it alone next time Quote Link to comment
JBM
if your parameters are good. it's gonna split and grow. I mean, isnt that the whole reason we buy little frags? Quote Link to comment
Nelson
Full water change and new bubble coral. I think it’s a recipe for war, like placing trump and putin in the same hotel room... I placed some acrylic between them since I am not at home this weekend 1 Quote Link to comment
Nelson
I forgot to ask if a salinity swing from 1.031 to 1.025 is bad. The LFS water was at 1.031 which is very high right? If I knew this beforehand, I would defenitely acclimate the coral first before adding to the cube. What could be the reason for them to run it above 1.030? Quote Link to comment
Nelson
Today, when I woke up, my par38 bulb wouldn’t turn on anymore. I ordered a replacement bulb, an ABI tuna blue, but this will be shipped from the US to my place (will take some time I guess..) Is it possible to use a normal halogen bulb in the meantime, before the ABI arrives? Or will the corals die because of this. my other option is a normal 5W LED from Ikea Thanks for responding Quote Link to comment
JBM
I would try the 5 watt bulb from ikea first. But to be honest. Your coral can go about a week with little effect. Think of shipping corals. 2-3 days with no water movement and zero light. Your gonna like the abi tuna blue. Taking pics is gonna be difficult, but the color is outstanding. Just be sure to mount it high. 30* optics :yikes: 1 Quote Link to comment
Jellyingabout
Interesting setup. Followed! Whats the plans for the phyto cultures? 1 Quote Link to comment

Uhm, for now it is put on hold. My culture crashed on the first day. I rinsed the glass with alcohol before adding phyto. Afterwards I added a couple droplets of orchid fertilizer, based on what somebody else had done. This bottle was close to F2 guillard. But maybe not good enough or too high dosage, or wrong salinity who knows. Maybe I give it another chance.. 1 Quote Link to comment
Jellyingabout
How'd you knock up the F2? I've never tried it myself but i see clams on the horizon so its becoming more likely Quote Link to comment

I think it will be better to start with the commercial phytoplankton products, for example these from Grotech company. It is more expensive but I think it will give better results. Later on you can start experimenting with other sources of fertilizer. For example Cu (copper) percentage should be low, otherwise it can build up in your fish and clams. But without copper there is no growth in phytoplankton. if you type in f2 guillard filetype:pdf into google, then you can find the recipe. 1 Quote Link to comment

Jellyingabout
I'm guessing the bubbles a bit aggressive lol 1 Quote Link to comment
ajmckay
You know - I like a nice bubble coral... That one looks pretty good IMO. Nice soft flow. Like the tank as well! DIY skimmer is a nice touch lol - given the Do!aqua tank 1 Quote Link to comment
Nelson
I hope the ABI arrives sooner than later. Maybe I order a CFL daylight bulb (6500k) for in the meantime. They get morning sun, but the hammer has some receding tissue below the polyps. Mr. bubbles doesn’t care luckily and eats a lot Quote Link to comment
Nelson
Abi is indeed tuna blue Strong light, too low first but now higher above water level. 1 Quote Link to comment
