The Little Blue One (Blue Marine 60)

Recommended Posts

Manfred

Hey There,

I am Manfred and live in the Netherlands, so first let me exuse me for my bad English. Together with my three dogs and five cats (breeding sphynx cats is another great hobby of mine), its pretty crowded in my home, but I figured that there was still room left for a small nano reef...

I started up a Blue Marine 60 (almost 17 gallons). I have used natural seawater, with real reef rock and added biodigest.

The BL dimensions are  15.7 x 17.7 x 13.8 inches h x l x d and comes with the following equipment:

1th compartment backside:

Pieces of real reef rock

Filtermedia:

Chemi Pure blue nano

Filterfloss

2nd  compartment backside

Skimmer: Blue Marine Skim 130 Skimmer Tunze 9001

3rd compartment backside:

Pump: Blue Marine Reefpower 600 / pompcapaciteit 660 l/h  Pump Sicce Syncra Silent 1.0 950l/h/ 251 US gph (3rd compartment backside)
Heating: Fluval Edge

ATO Tunze nano osmolator 3152

Lighting:

Blue Marine stocklight: Nano LED 11  Reefled 50
Heating: Fluval Edge

Streaming:

Jecod SW-2

Inhabitants:

Fish:

Clownfish 2x

Pseudochromis Fridmani

Sorft coral:

Ricordea Yuma Orange

Green discosoma / green ears

Brown dicosoma

Rhodactis Indosinensis

LPS:

Pink tipped torch / Euphyllia

Zoanthes sociatus blue yellow

SPS:

Green plate Montipora Australienis

Montipora branched blue polyp

Montipora encrusted

Acroporo formosa green

Seriatopora Hysrix (Bird's Nest)

Seriotopora Calendarium

Pocillopora Spp Green

Inverterbrates:

4x sand snails Nassarius Vibes

3x Trochus snail

1x  Blue hermit crab

Like I already said I started with natural seawater, real reef rock and some Biodigest, so the starting  cycle may take a while.  It gives me the opportunity to think about, which live stock is going to live in the Little Blue One.

Cycling in with real reef rock is less fun, compared to live rock...  I hope its worth the benefits....

Here an update....

I changed my skimmer for a Tunze 9001 and it runs perfect..... I also added an Jebao SW2 Powerhead.... and the biggest change is that I added Live Sand from Pink from Red Sea.... I must say starting with Real Reef Rock is pretty boring....

Oh and the first residents of my tank are 2 Trochus Snails !!!

Nano Reef loves pictures of ALL pets, not just the underwater ones!

Your cat seems quite annoyed at getting it's picture taken.  :-)

Haha I think he is stunning... but about no allergies, it depends if you are allergic for a cats' hair or for his skin scales...;)

This weekend I been shopping at the "candystore" and bougth an ATO Tunze Nano Osmolater  3152. So I am done with topping of ro water every evening 🥰.  I also bought a Hanna phosfate checker, its so much easer, I decided to buy every other month 😏😏😏, a Hanna alkalinity, a calcium  and a magnesium checker.

And as cherry on the cake I bought 3 little pieces of coral,  a pink tipped Euphylia,  an Acropora Formosa and a silver with blue  polyp branched Montipora.

May next buying will be some ricordea and I hope a Yasha Goby.

As I want more SPS I start with testing again my,. The Blue Marin has been cycling with two Nemo's and some lost soft corals for 2 years, so testing wasn't necessary. I am curious what te parameters will be.

Yesterday I did some testing which has  been a while 😊.

N04 0,18

N03 35

N02 0

Thats too high ... I think It is because I I put some old rock back in the Blue Marin and did some scapimg with glue. I did a 40 % waterchange and will repeat that next week .... Hope things comes to normal values otherwise I will try a new Dutch product called Reef Fuel it is said it can do miracles when it comes to NO4 and N03 its an organic mix.

Today, after the waterchange  I tested Po4 en No3 again:

Po4 0,15 = dropped 0,03

No3 20 = droppen 15

I hope after a few more waterchanges I will end with a nice Po4 en No3.

After a period of  uncertainty, whether the remains of a dead Henkie had been found or wheter it was just his shediing, I can confirm that Henkie exchanged the temporary for the eternal. This morning his empty shell was found in the aquarium The Little Blue One. Henkie will be remembered as the most brave and combative hermit crab of its kind, who always did his cleaning job in dangerous waters with the most loyal care.  Henkie will be missed 🖤.

Monday I did a 50  % waterschange again, and dosed bacteria and  today I did measure the values beneath.

P04 = 0,07 dropped 0,08

No3 = 5  dropped 15

So I hope after another 50 % waterchange, Po4 and No3 are at acceptable rates. Meanwhile I suffer from diatoms. Not so mutch but I blow off the rocks and sand with a turkeyblaster and put in the first back chamber some floss which I removed after one hour.  I will go on with this treatment untill the diatoms wil not appear anymore.

With great joy, I can announce, that earlier reports about Henkie, the hermit crab, that he msysteriously died turns out to be incorrect. Henkie has moved to a more luxurious shell after his molt and has taken refuge in the wild rocks of the Blue Marine Marine 60. Henkie is now ready to continue his important duties.

Covered the streaming pump with some filterfloss to help eliminating the diatoms.
