Today's coral is an attempt to diversify the bowls SPS population so I can see what works and where.  I bought a whole frag of this as birdsnest but looks like pocilopora too so who knows. I broke off this small tip and left the rest in another tankIMG_2006.thumb.JPG.db58b0d8a4e46cae64e5cdb45d1357d8.JPG

here is an overview photo for reference of placementIMG_2007.thumb.JPG.be92fbad4b5a1158841c0bfadbe82d1c.JPG

As you can see some red and green algae has started in the rocks! Already went through a diatom bloom on the sand but it disappeared already. Also had a tuft of hair algae next to the rainbow acan but something ate it away already before I could treat it! I'll keep an eye on it but it seems Stomatella snails are really good clean up crew membersIMG_2004.thumb.JPG.73ac653b654b216ae96462c50f14efb8.JPG

Stomatellas are the best. They clean where other things can't reach and don't bother anything desireable. They'll even clean goop off macroalgae :D

They need a fan club.

Decided it was ok to put the Duncan in the pico, and it's colors look cooler under this light anyway!  Got this from a store in Plymouth NH while out at work, tough life shopping corals at work!  It happily sat in the truck three more hours while I cleaned a few more water filters.  IMG_2015.thumb.JPG.04c7d45bcb23eebff1da08844bda872a.JPG

I forgot to add this one a day ahead of time so it's doesnt look as happy as could be, it loved it in my 40 though so should look like this soon...IMG_1995.thumb.JPG.e86a20caa6b5fa23d6bd6fd593579157.JPG

That's a nice Duncan! Good choice, adds movement in the Pico without stinging anything!

Added an acan from a store way down in Massachusetts(so hard to spell) it is very dark bodied but has green mouth and accents of orange under heavy blues, which the pico light lacksIMG_2020.thumb.JPG.e695179b4d6c617a823431f2238274e3.JPG

lots of algae on this one so it was pretreated but I still see a few survivors, I'll see how the crew cleans it up before further action

Happy tank this morning! IMG_2021.thumb.JPG.fa7f61fee1729525a2c265adce092448.JPGDreaming of making a Zoa insert this weekend. Maybe on that purple rock on the right?!? Also have to fix the pesky clear tube lid bumper thing that keeps folding off as seen in the picture.

Slacking on adding my corals a day ahead, but still achieving one a day! Here's this awesome acan I picked up a few months ago from a local on Boston reefers society.  It is just plain orange, in another tank a frag I made has gained some green so we will see what happens! IMG_2023.thumb.JPG.8120acc1ec7d41f330f61dd5cfb52801.JPG

The garden is growing nicely! As you can see I got a few free colonista snails(or similar) from a LFS that had a tank over run with them.  These fit in small places and seem to do work.  Also I think repetitive corals may look cool like another green trumpet and more blastos merlettis to make it look more natural.

Went back to the LFS with the sexy shrimp and stomatella and bought 2 more shrimp! They gave me a few snails too!IMG_2030.thumb.JPG.cec41c7acf8d381930aef11aefd289c2.JPG

instead of the zoas this weekend(next weekend) I did a mushroom insert! It has blue dot, green dot, and super man mushroom on it!  The super man is the smallest baby so hopefully grows quick.IMG_2027.thumb.JPG.14650271b368d890648d3ca97f62f719.JPGsuper man is to the left and above the blue dot and is so tiny and kind of shaded

Good acro polyp extension! And happy little hammer, the hammer is always in this goofy position in the AM and then perks his tentacles up throughout the day.IMG_2033.thumb.JPG.f80eea249225f75ed66a874c4fdd8e63.JPG

New acan transferred into the tank! It's from The Coral Dudes and was labeled as rainbow but is really blue and red haha it's the tiny one wedged between the others.IMG_2034.thumb.JPG.bfdee5cf9c7b0de8caea61552f57e72c.JPG

the three sexy shrimp have been continually together IMG_2043.thumb.JPG.b1f50b63b6118b4f07e176fb9c8fa502.JPG

Love the color on the duncan and I have the same dark purple acans. Mine is a colony of 10 or so heads. Did not even see the orange accent until I threw on a Nanobox light this weekend. Gorgeous coral and they really plump up too.

Second type of GSP added! This one is the brightest GSP I own and have ever seen really.

Again this light spectrum sucks in the bowl, excited to upgrade in 6 months!

Today's picture of a pissed off coral!IMG_2075.thumb.JPG.54fc9c09ac3c04bd6a20e337c7c289be.JPGthis acan has really nice colors in the 40, and certainly was sold to me as a "rainbow" when I bought it a long time ago .  Can't we get more creative with names like unicorn farts or something? Good news on the sexy shrimp I have fed the shit out of them and they have stopped picking at my corals! And one of them even molted which is always a good sign.  Fed the tank this morning, again after work, and then did a massive water change.  Duncan is stoked and boy can he poo!

25th Coral Added! IMG_2091.thumb.JPG.c06614d6e83c5dae94f42fd40fddeaea.JPG

Running late on adding it again so this is an upset acan. He also shades the darker acan below so I will move the shaded frag this weekend.  IMG_2087.thumb.JPG.d65482b218a5437b44e1c5d773eb7cad.JPG

And 20 mins later a stomatella and a SS are cleaning it up!(lights are off)IMG_2096.thumb.JPG.d529f96dfb9616dc88005be254f1a7dc.JPG

Update on Tank Maintenance  Since my friend came by with the algae barn goodies two weeks ago I have only been doing WCs after feedings, instead I add a TBS of phyto to the tank every day, seems to help out compete the nuisance algaes In using some nutrients up.  When corals poop, since it's such low flow I can see it under them and I baste it up and replace what I took out with fresh SW.  Phyto is good until November 9th so after that I will probably stop this as the tank should be a bit more mature.  I feed each day on weekends and Wednesday during the week, so the tank is still getting 100% new water frequently.

Haunted Hayride Acan, also purchased from the coral dudes last year, it has been riding on idle losing color since but the pico should restore its health.IMG_2115.thumb.JPG.c296b1b3d1e1f61100432640f61745ab.JPG

Saturday's AcanIMG_2120.thumb.JPG.4f9fc1a35be31b99ae6db4ad07188f33.JPGI think this acan is one of my first from a long time ago from aquarium depot, cheap corals to fill a beginners tank, my favorite yellow scroll Coral is from there. Top notch

Today is the day I will be adding zoas, I have changed their planned location from an island rock on the bottom to the tippy top rock right up front.  Some cool zoas to come but to tide you over a side shot of the acan garden, gaining some depthIMG_2127.thumb.JPG.546de265ee80bad3361822d28678f802.JPG

look at all the poop Duncan made on the sand bed off to the right! What a pig, easy on the Pepsi Fuller

Zoas Added! Top down viewIMG_2139.thumb.JPG.467d45d17b764af3fb994d65eb379cbb.JPG

1 utter chaos

1 gorilla nipple

1 twizzler

2 Rastas

small mat of eagle eyes

these zoas come from a series of neglected frags in my 40.  So I went ham with a havalon knife and some tweezers and super glue and grabbed these, dipped them in 3% h2o2 to get rid of the GHA and bryopsis(maybe) and glued them to the peak of the rock work that conceals the lift pipe where GSP was previously.

First power outage! Will be putting a battery backup airstone inline with a tee and two check valves tomorrow, will update with more details on how.  The tank is literally chock a block full of copepods, posiedons mix so a few types!  From now on all water from the pico will be put in my main tank to spike its pod population as my mandarin wipes them out, he ate NLS small fish pellets yesterday!(probably has been and that's why he's almost 2). Thinking the tank will make it until the morning as it's no worse than a shipping bag(filled with microscopic food!) IM40 has a battery back up for the MP10 so no worries there too. Back to sleep before I wake the baby and my wife throws me in the mantis tank.
