Did my first waterchange yesterday on the Pico.

It's so small it takes no time! But the challenge is getting in there without destroying it all.

Adjusted my pump and things are opening up...i guess the tiny tidal wave was too much for the corals not the light.

So turbulent flow-FAIL

Temp is holding steady still with just the pump.

Today the diatoms have appeared- they are so ugly! Lol.

My bulb is the same as yours, a no name chinese par 38 but I can't remember the wattage.  I have it hung pretty high so as to not bleach anything.  I am only running it for 6 hours but will slowly increase that to 8 hrs eventually.  I don't have any diatoms yet so I hope nothing is wrong and the cycle is progressing as it should.  Maybe I will move my ammonia badge on the sump to my jar just to make sure.

I wouldn't worry too much about lack of diatoms.

Moving the ammonia badge gives you an idea of whats going on.

Not much new with the tank:

So I got a new jar (same type) due to a visible line in the first one.  I haven't decided if I'm going to switch it out yet or not, but I'm posting a dry pic just in case someone calls foul:

Upcoming project:

In other news, GSP are still closed up tight.

Was this supposed to go in your thread?

Well things aren't doing very well.

Not sure if it's too much light or flow because everything else is on track.

My new coral started losing flesh and the macro has lost color.

Polyps still closed.

I so want to replace this 24watt light but there are no other par bulbs here besides the one I listed. Grrr.

Pretty!!

Hmmm.

Do you have any water parameter numbers?

That high Alk is suspicious to me, that's the first thing I'd try to get to the bottom of.

I would personally also try leaving the light off for just one day and see what happens.

That's what I was thinking too.

I'm working on the alk issue.

I was thinking of ordering the abi tuna blue but I plan to upgrade this Pico to a 5g fluval spec and want to be able to use the Abi on that.

Is there some reason you wouldn't be able to use the Tuna Blue on that?

Now that my Waterfall is down, I was considering selling my Tuna Blue and trying something a little different. ;)

I would think it would work. 12w on a 5g fluval spec. It's a longer tank but still not very big.

My cheap 24w par38 worked on 15g.

Let me know if you sell the tuna blue.

Have you tested for ammonia?

I've had an ammonia badge in there. No ammonia.

I used liverock from my existing tank.

I have a hermit and a pom pom in there that are doing fine.

That's why I'm baffled.

That's the odd thing.

My alk in both my other tanks are not that high.

Average tests for both my tanks are 420 ca and 8 alk.

What is the Alk measurement of newly mixed water normally?

Link to comment

Normally 8

Did a waterchange on Friday on all 3 tanks.

Alk.             Ca.

10g 8          425

25g  8         425

Pico 10       370

Hmmm...yeah that's strange that water that mixies at 8 would suddenly be 10 in the jar just a couple of days later.

Maybe mix up another bucket and check that Alk does measure 8?

My water mixes at 11 so that's what the bowl is after its 100% water change.

Adding that same mixed water to my 14g only raises the Alk in the tank to 8-9 because it's mixing with lower Alk water to start with.
