Original post:

Thanks for checking out my tank thread. I've had a nano tank of some sort running for the last 12 years but this is my first AIO, and it's been several years since I've had any livestock.

My last tank that I broke down to set this one up was a 6g acrylic cylinder with liverock, a heater, 20 watt 50/50 CF and a hydor koralia. I changed the water every 4-6 months and the glass was opaque with coraline algae. I think I was just too lazy to take the tank down and it felt weird to not have something going and let the liverock dry up. There were still some bristleworms and smalls snails living in there somehow. Kids also got in the way of taking care of anything, but my now 3 year old daughter was excited about getting a fish so I decided to set up something new.

I ordered the Nuvo 10 from IM about a month ago as it seemed to be a pretty popular tank. It's crazy how much the hobby passes you by if you aren't paying attention. LEDs were just starting to be used the last time I was actively stocking a tank and biocubes were the only AIO's on the market and they were failing left and right. I also ordered the sicce syncra 0.5 and tunze osmolator nano after reading through a whole bunch of Nuvo 10 journals. Never used an ATO in any of my past tanks.

The IKEA table I had been using for my previous tank was seriously deformed from the weight of the previous tank and was no longer level so I built a new stand.

Turns out that my rocks and sand were mature enough to avoid any cycle in transferring them to the new tank so I added a CUC after the first week, and then an ocellaris the week after with no issues. Added a second ocellaris this past weekend and everything seems to be happy. Waiting for my par38 bulb to arrive before stocking any coral.

Really nice job on the stand, I always appreciate when you make your own and get the leveling feet.  Not even redsea puts leveling feet on their stands.  Have an IM10 myself great little tank and won't let you down, down the road if you look for a skimmer I like the ghost but seems like you have research down anyways! Nice looking rocks too!

Wow, it looks great with the rock from the previous tank, and I like the scape too. Super nice job on the stand, it turned out looking really nice. What are your plans for the tank after you get the new bulb?

Thanks, I wasn't going to put them on but I noticed the corner I was planning to put the tank wasn't level. Glad I did.

Haven't ran a skimmer on any of my past tanks so I still haven't decided yet for this one. I'll see how things go as I begin stocking corals.

Thanks, some of the nicer rocks were ones that my wife and I picked up off of a beach in cuba.

Thanks teenyreef, your journal was a big inspiration for me.

I've mainly kept softies in the past as I've only ever ran 50/50 compact fluorescent bulbs, but I was thinking of adding some LPS this time.

Nice work! These are definitely nice looking tanks. I'm a big fan of softies. If you try LPS, I highly recommend blastos! Which PAR bulb did you go with?

Thanks. For now I just ordered one of the cheap chinese bulbs from eBay. I'll see what grows and then maybe upgrade.

Bulb finally arrived. I ordered this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/301965526915 (27W PAR38)

How far above the water line should I be mounting this? I have it on a gooseneck clamp. Light looks nice, not used to how blue it is, looks darker than under 50/50 CF. Description has the LEDs listed as 3 each of blue, cold white and UV/purple. Anyone know what the purple wavelength would be? I'm assuming if it's actually UV it's a longer wavelength and not harmful?

I swapped out the return nozzle for a 1/2" locline y-splitter. I put a flare nozzle on one of the arms and left the other open so I could access the glass for cleaning more easily.  Not sure how I feel about it yet. I have the sicce 0.5 at the max output and the flow seems pretty diffuse (is that ok?). I'll reassess once I begin stocking some coral. It does help that the clowns don't get blown around anymore if they get directly in front of the return outlet.

Also ended up moving around the rocks a little bit and added an extra piece of dry rock I had lying around.

Didn't do my research on LEDs before buying the bulb. Ebay listing has the "beam angle" as 120 degrees so I need to put the light quite close to the water (4.5") in order to get full coverage. Is this going to fry anything I put in the tank?

Where'd you get that gooseneck? Way better than mine. I got this giant fifty foot long monster from brs.

It's 18", just can't tell because of the angle

You'll probably want to lower it slowly to avoid that.  120 degrees is pretty wide coverage if I understand correctly so it won't give a narrow focused beam that would really cook things.

Great, that's what I wanted to know, thanks. I've raised it a little (7") and it still seems ok. I'll just put anything I get at the bottom of the tank and keep a close eye I guess.

Tank looks great! You did an even better job building the stand! I love it. If you don't mind, how much did you spend on materials?

Not at all. I hadn't actually added it all up on my own because it was several trips to home depot over the course of a week so I'm curious myself:

~$12 on 2x4s, ~$40 on plywood, ~$12 on finishing nails and nail set, ~$15 on screws, ~$6 on levelers, ~$7 on hardware (knob, hinges), ~$25 on trim, ~$12 on clear coat. Already had paint lying around.

So ~$130 CAD (~$100 USD)

Stopped by a frag store here in the GTA to get my first corals for this tank. Had a really difficult time limiting myself but I settled on three. A red acans frag with 4 heads (with two more tiny ones sprouting up), a single head of green octospawn and a frag of meteor shower cyphastrea.

Everyone got a dip in revive and then went to the sandbed. These pictures were taken approx five hours later. Everyone looks ok so far, octospawn is still not completely inflated and cyphastrea 'tentacles' are not yet extended like I've seen in some pictures.

How long typically does it take before I can start moving them up off the sand? Does the cyphastrea need to stay in the shade, or can it eventually move upwards as well? I've read mixed opinions of this here.

Tank update

Moved the acans (or is it micromussa??) And octospawn off the sand bed earlier this week and glued the acans last night. I also moved the cyphastrea out of the shade initially but the polyps didn't look as happy so I moved it back into its cave. The new rock I added 3 weeks ago I already showing some specks of corraline.

20170930_211647_HDR.thumb.jpg.15bcae0b590e986fdc81c6de088243ab.jpg

I also added a bag of carbon to the first chamber under my filter floss and ~1 lb of LR rubble into the second chamber in media bags.

Went to the LFS twice this past week looking for new frags, came back today with a tailspot instead.

20170930_202019.thumb.jpg.53b1169e75bea712d1dc935d94f18e25.jpg

I had told myself I wasn't going to get any more fish but I couldn't helpful myself. I've wanted a tailspot for 10 years now and never pulled the trigger because of all the stories of read about them starving. Crossing my fingers and hoping mine will eat pellets/flakes.

He's been pretty active already only hours into the tank (no qt tank unfortunately, taking another risk). No aggression from either of the clowns so far and he has plenty of good boltholes available. We asked my soon to be 3 y.o. daughter what we should name it and she immediately said "octopus!". So we currently have Nemo, Nemo and octopus... May need to think about renaming in the future.
