can algae scrubber be your only filtration?

Hello guys, these questions are for those who uses algae scrubber for years now. can an algae scrubber work if its your only filtration method? I'm thinking of setting up a new tank with an algae scrubber as its main filtration system beside mechanical filtration and live rocks only. Would that work? the setup will be..

 

55 gallon reef tank

20 gallon sump with LR, mech filter, and 12"x 16" algae scrubber.

circulation pump

heater

 

no skimmer, no reactors.

 

any idea if this will work?
