Pjanssen
Just a question, not an accusation. For example: What makes one reefers thread so much more active than another? And why do some reefers, no matter the topic, get so many hits? Just curious. 6 Quote Link to comment
calvin
For me it's all about spelling and grammar skills. 7 Quote Link to comment

I think sometimes it's the content of the thread. But is also how many members someone converses with. I know I go check out the posts of people I know on here first. So if I see you post something, I'm going to read it before Jane Smith's post whom I know nothing about. So I think the more people you interact with, the more active your thread will be. Just my thoughts. And yes, I totally think reefers can be cliquey. I notice that in my local reef club. And here. But then again here I think it's more just chatting with the people you know if that makes any sense. 8 Quote Link to comment

Ok, ok, ok..... i agree with @stellablue, I think i typically reply to the people I "know" first..... then I hit the other threads on the home page. I also agree with @ninjamyst..... I check in on threads that have the same tank, equipment, etc. i feel it's sort of like making friends in person.....sometimes it's out of shared interests, sometimes it's out of a shared experience, and sometimes it's just luck. I think just as in life, the more you reach out and be authentic, the more people will respond. 4 Quote Link to comment

GregEmmitte
It's the internet. I personally have more interaction with @stellablue @WV Reefer @1891Bro and @seabass than any others for no particular reason other than we talk to eachother lol. 6 Quote Link to comment
mitten_reef
A little while ago, I was actually thinking out loud something similar to this in "what's on your mind?" status update. I felt like if you aren't a beginner looking for advice, you don't get a ton of traffic on your thread. Or if you're not a NR vet, you don't know many ppl that had been here a long time. So I called myself stuck in a reefing's version of sohpomore slump. To be honest though, I don't venture out to too many threads (probably follow 10 or so), so me not getting traffic is my own doing as well. 7 Quote Link to comment
GregEmmitte
Really this is just basic psychology/sociology. I mean we can get deep into this rabbit hole if you like. 5 Quote Link to comment

Agreed, it's also supply and demand in a weird way. The more you post, the more likely people will be interested in what you do/say/show/take pics of/etc; therefore, more eyeballs on the thread. 1 minute ago, WV Reefer said: If you build it, they will come. Thrassian Atoll
Just got back into the hobby not long ago. My old tank thread didn't have many views or replies, due to a few things. My camera sucked in 2012. Also, my rockscape was terrible and the tank just wasn't interesting. My new tank thread I am going to update as often as I can mostly for me to see how my tank is progressing and how I am progressing in the hobby. Do I want to get a ton of views and comments? Of course I do but it's not going to deter me from posting if I don't. Also, it's about building forum friendships. The more you post on other people's tank threads or answer questions, the more your threads will be commented on. 8 Quote Link to comment

Clown79
I try to reply as to as many as possible but I have the time to, not everyone does. I just enjoy talking about reef keeping and helping where I can. I enjoy the interactions, the learning, teaching, and difference in opinions. 6 Quote Link to comment
Nano sapiens
Yes, just like in any other field. Reefers at a certain level will tend to group with others at the same level since they have the same, or similar, issues that need addressing. Same goes for those with a certain size of tank grouping together (a person with a 10g isn't likely to have that much in common with someone who has a 500g). IME, I've found the Internet forums to actually be less cliquish than the local clubs. Another thing I've noticed is that those tank threads where only tank related issues are discussed tend to have a lot less traffic in comparison to those that are full of a person's life events. Just the way it is... 7 Quote Link to comment

TheBig053
Yes, its get clicky aroud here, but I don't think I've seen anyone turn anyone away for advice on this board since Derrick1980. That being said, I just went to my local reef society meeting today and the old timers were cliquey, but i met some young heads, that were cool, and scored about $250 in free SPS. 5 Quote Link to comment
BustytheSnowMaam
I stopped visiting certain people's aquarium journals when you could tell that they weren't wearing any clothes in the reflection on their tank photos. 15 Quote Link to comment
