Yeah, I'm not really worried about it. The tank has been up and running now about 2.5 months. Currently the blue channel driver for my LED light went out and waiting on a new one from the company, so right now it's only getting white light. 

 

Just thought it was weird it happened right after the carbon was swapped out, before that it was completely clear. I think the last time the diatoms popped up I had just changed carbon too.

Depends on the carbon brand you are using.

 

Good high quality carbons won't cause these issues unless you keep it in for too long. 

 

 you can use too much carbon. This can lead to depletion of vital elements and over polish the water causing lighting shock to corals.

 

It's best to use the recommended amount or less and change it every 2-3 weeks.

It could be the carbon. The lower quality carbons may leach phosphates, not sure about silica.

This is an excellent carbon.

 

By the pics of your tank, it looks like diatoms. This is a common issue with new tanks.

 

They take time to go away and often do on their own unless you are introducing a source for them to feed on. 

 

I had issues for 4-5 months on and off with them.

 

Changed my carbon

Changed to distilled water from RO (not ro/di)

Added purigen

Use phosguard in small quantities

One thing that worries me about that Seachem stuff is it states there's no reason to ever replace it.....lol That seems a bit silly? 

 

I'm wondering how the Seachem Matrix Carbon compares to the BRS ROX 0.8 Carbon.

I think you're talking about Seachem Matrix, which is a biological filtration media?

Oh yeah....nvm for some reason when I searched Matrix Carbon it came up with regular matrix lol.

you must be looking at Seachem Matrix bio media not the carbon.

 

There is nothing in the carbon instructions that state no need to replace.

 

Carbon always gets replaced as it gets exhausted whereas the biomedia isn't replaced because it's usage in the system is different.
