Fascinating but worrisome at the same time :/ And about your amphipods, I remember reading that some are carnivorous, so that could explain why they would be on your zoa. Or they might feed on something that is on your zoa but can't see. I really don't know. I have pods, some bigger ones, but never had an issue with them :/ Quote Link to comment
fishfreak0114
The little bit of reading I did about colonial hydroids yesterday made them seen really bad. Pretty much every post I read was against them. But I think I'm going to wait and see with mine. I'm pretty sure they've been in the system a while without attempting world domination. If you want to get rid of yours, I'm not sure what the best approach would be. Drain the tank and kill them with fire? You can't glue over them on the glass (well, I guess you technically could). I need to give this some more thought. Quote Link to comment

If you learn any more, let me know... I went to a reptile expo today! Any interest in pics? 1 Quote Link to comment

On a sad note, my TSB is dead found it stuck on the filter intake last night. I'm not suprised though, it was so skinny, and never ate anything but pods. So now I have my purple firefish (awesome fish and eats like a pig lol) and my panda goby. I would love a GBG but impossible to find in Canada my lfs has many TSB in stock but not sure I wanna get another one even though I really like that fish! Any ideas? 2 Quote Link to comment

My purple fire fish is becoming a pig and bolder each day during feeding time with my clowns. It even took a run at one of them last night. I am waiting for it to punk Pennywise (bigger female) once and for all and finally be allowed to eat food at the surface instead of waiting for pellets to sink down to it. Quote Link to comment
Lula_Mae
Yes on the reptile pics! I've never had one but they are cool critters! What about another small goby like a neon? Or a pink-streaked or possum wrasse? Oh, and sorry about the TSB. Quote Link to comment

Tailspots don't last for very long in captivity for some reason. M's got an infection and died about a year after we got it. I'm keeping a few of the oddballs out of my next Solomon Island shipment next week. They get some that aren't super coloured, but they have the coolest personalities. That said, Bicolours out of Sri Lanka are very nice and seem to do well in captivity. Quote Link to comment

I love my Jeff. He's eating really well now - he has a nice fat tum. I hope he's with me and Puzzle for awhile. Reptile expo pics! I tried to pick my very favourites. There are like 100+ pics, lol. I'll do a second post too. If I had been looking to buy a ball python, I'd have been VERY tempted by the guy on the left: Or this guy on the right: Or this guy... ??? A smushy butterbee! I don't know that I would ever get a woma python, but they're one of my favourite snakes and I always look for them. This was the only one I saw: A hognose is probably the snake I will get eventually. I've never seen or heard of tri-colours before: That check pattern on the left guy... I've never seen one of these either! A baby Pilbara rock monitor: Pink-bellied sideneck! I love these babies: Monkey tailed skink, also new to me: Sooooo little!! Pretty babies. 2 Quote Link to comment
Madcat
Ackie monitor: Axolotl: I was like, "Hello! You are nosy!" This baby ornate uromastyx... And this silly-looking dude. He's some kind of monitor. I forget. More ball pythons: I saved my favourites for last! Nakey babies!! (They were friends, not food!) Last year this breeder brought dwarf and Chinese hamsters too - I was disappointed that they didn't this year; but then, you don't go to a reptile expo to pet hamsters. I did pet the nakey babies. SKINKS! Blue tongue skinks are one of two dream reptiles for me. Last year there were almost no Northern blueys, which is what I'd like. This year there were several! There was also this guy: The above guy, according to the vendor, is a very uncommon subspecies which I had never heard of. Started with an H. Apparently the black on the sides is characteristic. He's a long-term captive wild-caught and the vendor was very excited to show me when my friend told him I like skinks. He "didn't travel well" so I wasn't allowed to hold him, but apparently he's usually a good boy. This is what I want! $550: And $800... eep! Look at that perfect cantoloupe colour on the sides, though! Then I got to hold this big dog: My other dream reptile!! I honestly don't know which I would get, if I could roll up to one of these events and pick any animal. That guy is a Grande Terre leachie gecko. Here are some non-Grande Terre babies which I wanted very badly to take home ($800 each though): And a Grande Terre baby... I love them! But sooo expensive! One of my coworkers has a male-female leachie pair. Maybe she can get them to breed and give me one of the little wrinkle babies for cheap... I can hope! Jeff and Puzzle are swimming together in the water column as I type and it's SO cute! I took some coral update pics today, will upload later. 3 Quote Link to comment

fishfreak0114
That looks like so much fun! I've always wanted a snake, but my parents don't want one in the house. Some day! That leachie gecko is so cool!!! Gotta say, it beats my leopard gecko in the coolness department. 1 Quote Link to comment
TheBig053
Very cool indeed! Is that a Gecko or a house cat? Hah. I was never a big fan of all the designer/albino ball python morphs. I think the plain old natural look is beautiful all on its own. I will say though, those pastel and banana morphs are pretty cool looking. 4 minutes ago, fishfreak0114 said: I've always wanted a snake, but my parents don't want one in the house. Some day! Just start bringing them home with out permission! That's how I ended up breaking my parents. I used to catch all sorts of wild snakes and bring them home to keep for a short period of time when I was kid. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission! They finally broke down and let me get a Northern Pine Snake that was a classroom pet of one of my mom's teacher friends. That was a cool snake! One of the largest species in NA and could so hiss loud you could hear it on a different floor of the house. She was very friendly though, so the hissing didn't happen very often. Had to give her to my high school football coach/science teacher when I went off to college. I got the Ball Python when I moved out of the dorms after freshman year. 3 Quote Link to comment

Breeders are trying to inject more pink or yellow into their lines, but that's about it. Otherwise they're basically grey or green sausages, lol. This is Bonnie, who I held at the last expo (the $800 babies above are hers): Not a lot of variation just yet. But I want one so so badly. Look at her smile... and her little foot clutching my finger... 4 hours ago, TheBig053 said: Very cool indeed! Is that a Gecko or a house cat? Hah. Anyway, "easier to ask for forgiveness than permission" is something my friend keeps saying too, but not with my parents... I'm getting a bird in the next month, which is already a huge concession for them, so I have to try to be good. But it was very hard not to just scoop up one of those fat babies and run. Anyway, my aquarium! I wiped away the weird white branching stuff... haven't seen it again yet. I wanted to post progress pics of my trumpet coral! Here's The Saddest Trumpet when I got it: And here it is yesterday: It gets more trumpet-shaped all the time! That second head has really filled out, too. Funny story, recently I excitedly pulled out my phone to show my coworker (who gave me the trumpet) the progress it had made. She was like, "THAT's what I gave you?!" Turns out she had given her husband instructions on how and what to frag so he could bring the corals to work while we were both there and I guess her husband grabbed an especially tiny and shrivelly frag. She had warned me the trumpet coral was neglected and needed TLC, but apparently most of it isn't THAT bad. She offered to give me a bigger frag, but I declined. I like watching Saddest Trumpet grow. Acans looking nice and fluffy: The blastos! My hermies pushed the small one away from the rock and I haven't moved it back yet. My zoas seem to be safe enough up on the rock. I have four heads left: one red, one purple, and two baby heads that look to be purple too. They all seem happy enough even though they're pretty close to the light. The skeletons of the other heads are totally gone - just little pockets in the glue where they used to be. As long as these four heads make it, and propagate, I'll be happy... but there were at least 6 red polyps initially. They're why I bought the frag. Eagle eyes are still okay. My palys are definitely looking harassed, and I've seen critters on the frag plug. It must taste as good as it looks, though, because it hasn't been decimated yet. Fingers crossed for its health. Marius is clearly protecting it fiercely in that pic. What do we all think of peppermint shrimp? Assuming I could find one that eats aiptasia. I see one or two new tiny aiptasias every time I manage to glue over an old one. Worried they'll eventually ditch the frag plugs and spread to my rock. 1 Quote Link to comment
fishfreak0114
Not all peppermint shrimp will eat aiptasia, and I've heard a number of stories about them tearing into perfectly healthy corals. That being said, I never had any problems with mine. I didn't buy them for aiptasia though, so I can't attest to their eating abilities. 1 Quote Link to comment
StinkyBunny
Yea, there are 2 species of Peppermint shrimp, 1 Atlantic and 1 Pacific, you want the Atlantic ones. Even then, it's hit or miss with them. They annoy me badly. 1 Quote Link to comment
Lula_Mae
My peps sorta ate aiptasia but found ripping off zoa skirts to be great fun. They died for whatever reason so I never observed them eating my corals. 1 Quote Link to comment
Madcat
Okay, I guess no peppermint shrimps for me then! I'd need a pretty big wrasse to eat those if they started killing my zoas. My grape caulerpa arrived! I actually forgot I had ordered it in a fit of grief after missing out on that dragon's breath. Plus, it shipped eight days ago so I had a whole week to forget about it. My stepdad handed me the envelope and I just stared blankly and wondered why it felt so squishy and warm for a moment before remembering. Colour me impressed. This thing has been in transit for EIGHT DAYS, and the rotten-egg smell when I cut open the envelope could have knocked me over. I totally expected the macro to be nothing but a soupy mess and I was like "oh, well, at least it was pretty cheap." Not bad! The water was horribly hot (it's been sitting in a metal Canada Post box for at least a few hours...) so I just put it straight in a tupperware of tank water. Had to pick off some of what looked like GHA with tweezers. I wasn't sure where it would like to live in the tank, so I just rubber-banded it to a rock and put it in the corner. Obviously I missed some algae. But seriously, I'm impressed! I hope it grows a lot! 4 Quote Link to comment

And yes, the ebay seller mentioned that about international shipping. They said they usually lose the bubbles in transit and grow them back in the tank, so I pretty much expected a slimy red stalk. But it's got little bubbles all over! Maybe they'll survive. 1 Quote Link to comment
