So for those of you who know, I have no idea what was being shipped to me today.  For those of you who dont know, go to the contest thread.  One of the new critters is a serpant star and I noticed something odd about the body, I am not familiar with starfish.

Here is a photo.

Should I release him in the tank? I dont want him to die and decay where I cannot remove him.

the bag was also very cloudy thay he came in.

Can you put it into another container with new saltwater to quarantine it awhile before you decide? At least improve its water conditions and see if it responds. That area on the right side definitely looks unusual.

If he is from FL, then temp is not a huge issue short term. if you have an air pump or small powerhead that will be enough.

all of my "actual" buckets are occupied.  he is in a 1 quart paint bucket.  there isnt room for an airpump or powerhead

Well that's a good sign! Although one of my friends had a serpent star, the body got eaten but the legs kept moving around for weeks ?

I THINK it is the madreporite and might have been open more to get better water movement within it. However, I am NOT an expert and am basing this off of what I can lookup online.

If you have a large net, you could put the net at the top of the water with edges of the net resting on the rim of the tank, and put him in the net.

That way it would be in the water but contained if it died and you could monitor it.

Anything simple like that that you could utilize to keep it in the tank but separated would be helpful.
