Ran into some confusion about where exactly to place the overflow box, and the return. This is all so new to me. I don't want to make anything permanent unless I'm certain I've got it right. I was considering 2 returns on each side, centered overflow, but decided against it. I know I'll change my mind after I drill, either way. Sooo here goes nothin. Tonight, I drill... Any thoughts/opinions on the tank overflow and return placement? The plan is this: Quote Link to comment
TatorTaco
Hmmm....Maybe post in the Beginner Thread? I'd suspect you'd find a lot of wisdom there and they could give solid advice. You've got guts. I'd be terrified to drill a tank! Quote Link to comment
samnaz
After doing a bit of reading I have come to the conclusion that I need an overflow with three drains for a Bean Animal configuration - the ultimate "set and forget" failsafe system. I returned the Eshopps Eclipse S overflow. Considered the Eclipse L instead. Ultimately, I have decided on a custom Modular Marine overflow box with three 1" bulkhead drains. Should be here in about a week! 1 Quote Link to comment
samnaz
And so this isn't just the worlds slowest most boring upgrade build ever, here are some photos of my Gold Hammer and fellow barnacle friend. 2 Quote Link to comment

samnaz
A few reasons: I read quite a few reviews of people complaining the Eclipse L external box bows. Also read complaints the lid warps. Modular Marine has virtually no chance of warping as the lids are made of polycarbonate. The box won't bow either. Modular marine comes with a lid for both internal and external boxes. It has a removable weir for easy cleaning. The internal box is 2.75" shorter. In the end, it was only $65 more and seems to be of greater quality, will last longer and comes with quite a few extras so I thought what the hell and went for it. We shall see. Do you have a build thread? Quote Link to comment

samnaz
Still haven't drilled the tank. I decided to repaint and finish the stand first, which I will be doing this week. For now, just a photo dump.... The black sponge is growing out of control! It looks awesome, I think. Glad I kept it around. Cowrie snail. You can even see the eyeballs in these pictures! I never even noticed it's eyeballs before these photos. Cowrie sniffing out food. The cowrie is so crazy cool looking. 2 Quote Link to comment

Not great. I lost two of them about a week after they arrived. I lost the orange octospawn and teal torch, both within the span of a single day... it was awful! I hate losing corals, especially beautiful ones. I still don't know why. I suspected damage from shipping but looking back I'm thinking it might have been brown jelly disease. But that was months ago, and I still have the gold torch, gold hammer and teal octospawn. I haven't put up the quad yet because I have almost no room available on the back panel, because I have the AC70 and Aquamaxx hob skimmer. Will be putting it on the new tank which will be up and running in less than a month. Waiting for those black friday sales 1 Quote Link to comment

You'll probably have to take rocks out, work on them, then see how much you accomplished and do it again. I believe @teenyreef had to battle them in one of his tanks. 1 Quote Link to comment

I fought them in multiple tanks, both my 10g and my old 4g. I've even had some in the 40g and the 30g. But in the bigger tanks I had learned my lesson, and crush them the instant I see one. That keeps them under control. They took over my 10g and 4g tanks for a while. In both cases, the solution was to pull every rock out, inspect them under a bright light, and crush every single !@%~$@^$ vermetid snail I could find with a pair of forceps. Then I put the rocks back in, and repeated the process every three or four weeks for about three months. Now I just see one or two pop up every few months, and I crush them right away. I also think that certain fish will help control them as long as they are small and just growing up. IMy 10g has Doug the Leopard Toby Puffer. He didn't help much when I had lots of big ones, but once I got rid of 99% of them, I've never seen another one. PS: I never had much luck with super glue. I found the only way to get the glue to reliably cover up the shell was to take the rock out of the water, at which point it was easier and quicker to just crush them. And far more satisfying 3 Quote Link to comment

Really? I did not see that. What were the concerns? I didn't do a thorough inspection of the S yet but at first glance it seemed to be high quality. Quote Link to comment

I wonder if I should just get a pair of forceps and some gloves and go to town on them in the tank... either way it's gunna be a long battle. Lesson learned that's for sure. Quote Link to comment
Halo_003
Hey, did you get drilled yet? If so what kind of plumbing are you doing inside of the overflow box? A bean animal setup? I drilled last night and am trying to get at least the drain lines plumbed this weekend, but I am not yet sure what to do inside of the overflow box. Quote Link to comment

The traditional bean animal setup with two u-tubes won't fit, so we're gunna have to improvise. The bean animal variation plan for my overflow is: A low profile strainer for the full siphon, inserted directly into the bulkhead. U-tube for the trickle (street 90 degree slip x spigot, 90 degree elbow, straight pipe). Standpipe for the emergency. Here's a photo of someone else's same exact overflow that I plan to emulate. 2 Quote Link to comment
