what do sponges do in a tank? I mean...they don't move around do they? what kind of nutrients and lighting do they need to survive/thrive? can they be harmful to tank mates?

They filter.

They do not move but they can spread in various ways.

Some are photosynthetic.

Some can be aggressive in their growth by rapidly covering corals.

how do they anchor on? are they hard to remove if they encroach on your corals?

All of mine, except for two that I bought, just showed up one day. If they get to close to something you can just pic them off.

Heres a few from both of my tanks:

they look like the stuff nightmares are made of, LoL!

so I'm guessing sponges remove easily then?

They definitely give off some 'Stranger Things' underworld vibes 😄

They're usually not difficult to scrape off a rock, but small remnants often grow back.

I haven’t had one yet that I couldn’t just pick off if needed.

The yellow sponge actually disintegrated into little specs that blew all over the tank and made new sponges. I thought it was dying. 😄

Damn, I didn't even know that they would do that. That's really cool. I have a couple cool ones on a small piece of rock.

I just caught that big f*cker trying to murder Buffalo Bill! 😠

I mean, Buffalo Bill had it coming, karmically speaking, but I can’t have that. He’s the OG of this tank!

I hope I can trap him but:
