Never Let Die Aquatics
Hello currently have a jbj 30 with reef breeder led , use to running t5/metal halide on my older tanks. i currently have lights 12" from surface at 35% blue and 10% white. sps are doing fine with that amount . is that enough percentage for 30 gal or should i slowly ramp up and stop at what percentage. thanks. evilc66
I'd say it's a good starting point. You can probably increase that some, but it's going to depend a lot on what the rest of your livestock plan will be. If you are going primarily sps, then you can turn it up higher than you would if you were doing a mixed reef with lps and softies, you would have to limit the output to make them happy. You can't really just give a percentage to set the two channels to and call it good. There are a lot of variables. How long has that light been over the tank and corals? if it hasn't been over corals for too long, then it may be a little early to say which way you need to go. It can take days or weeks to see changes in the corals. Unfortunately, bleaching from too much light can happen very quickly, so starting low like you are doing is a good thing. It's just that with it at a lower setting, it may take while to see any negative effects (browning) from having it set too low. Either way, the best thing to do it take it slow and keep an eye on the tank. Your corals will tell you everything you need to know. When making adjustments to the light (most likely increasing the output), take it nice and slow. The slower you go, the better the corals will acclimate to the changes. When increasing, bump the channels no more than 5% every week to two weeks, observe, and adjust again. Link to comment
