Jrkrouse13
Just started a new nano 20g long and I think I have too much live sand in the tank. Total is about 40lbs and amounts to about 2-3 inches of sand bed. Should i remove to about 1-2 inches? Suggestions on what to do with the now excess live sand? Link to comment
Militant Jurist
I think 1" to 1.5" is common for nano tanks that have sand. You could use the excess in a refugium, if you have one. Link to comment
Jrkrouse13
I was not actually planning on running a refugium and am still considering a hob for mechanical filtration. Link to comment
ReefNewby82
Sand depth is really subjective I feel. Deeper sand means more biological filtration, however shouldn't be disturbed much. Allows for more sand burrowing livestock though to help keep stirred up. If you plan on removing some and are already cycled with livestock, I would personally remove the sand slowly. Maybe a cup or half cup every couple of days. If no livestock or inhabitants you could remove it faster than that... Link to comment
Clown79
You simply can vacuum the sand out with water changes. I removed a half inch each water change. I then switched sand out all together. I also suggest vaccuming sand weekly but not if its a deep sand bed. Link to comment
