Help!

Will a sand-sifting starfish eat my derasa clam? I just got the clam and the starfish is lying on him. I was so concerned my babylonian snails would go after it (they've been removed) that I didn't even think about the starfish.

Sand sifting stars are microfauna predators. They eat the bacteria and tiny critters that make live sand "live." That said, they generally don't do well in small tanks, as they eventually starve. That may take a long time to happen, so, it's not uncommon to hear of people keeping them for a year, or more.

While I don't think a sand sifter would attempt to eat a clam, I certainly can't be sure. I consider it doubtful. I believe it's more likely to be just crawling over it, or eating microfauna living on the shell. However, it may actually be eating your clam (however doubtful I believe it to be) beacause its starving.
