Yeah maybe, I am kinda hooked on how t5s look. I’m hoping that me banging on and swearing at my ati fixed it. a six /eight bulb and a bigger tank would be ideal but not in the budget right now

in the future you could always go for the reefbars, a set of three or four is basically the same look and spread as T5's.

Testing stuff arrived today, 3 Hanna checkers for ulr  phosphate, alk and nitrate. Also rented a par meter.

Ha yeah, probably will dial it down depending on what corals I choose to stock. that was just the first go with the par meter. ati and reefbrite on 100 percent. Going to take some more readings at different levels of dimming.

First round of testing complete. These Hanna checkers make testing so much easier.

salinity 1.027

Alk 8.0 dkh

phosphate 0.02 ppm

Nitrate 10.1 ppm

From my limited knowledge these numbers look ok ?

personally to make maintenence easier, i would let the nutrients rise a bit but raise alk too. gives corals moren utrients and you have to stress less about water changes

Numbers look good, however, phosphate is a little low.  I would check it again (try to test around the same time each day is what I was always told) and confirm the number, but as long as you are consistently reading some phosphates it should be fine,

Thanks. I guess I had the knowledge to get the tank that far. All I tested for was alk  ,dosed 2 part and did water changes. Then I watched it all die. I think nutrients bottomed out and trying not to repeat that this time.  Also going to try to go sps dominate this time. In my head I envision acro milli tenuous montipora  colonies  etc all brightly colored with polyps waving. Or a bunch of white sticks covered in algae, either way I’m going to try

I was wondering how my snails are keeping my rocks so clean . Like they scrape it down even coralline. Well turns out I got a little hitchhiker urchin? This rock is pretty cool! Sorry about the bad photo best I could do in the dark.

Planned on getting a pair of clown fish today, LFS had long fins but I didn’t  really like how they look. Look tattered to me. Came home with two monti frags instead.

There is a "half long fin" or "short-long fin" which doesn't have the odd tassled/frayed look to it, they're cheaper too lol...

ordered some coral from cultivated reef . Too cold this week to ship .  Bubble tip is on a walk about right now .

Do you have specific nem guards?  If so, they might be worth looking into.  I had the fish guards they come with and it ended up shredding a nem anyways when it decided to stroll.

Yeah just using the fish guards that came included. Definitely see how a nem could still get chopped with them. Sorry that happened to you. Thanks for the suggestion I didn’t know nem guards existed for the Nero3 , looking at them now

Cultivated reef order arrived on Wednesday. Everything looks good, beach bum monti is lacking some color but I can see it is there. Cultivated reef was a pleasure to deal with, delayed my shipping a couple times to avoid freezing weather. Super thoughtful, potato photos cause Friday night drinks. Never had luck with birds nest so giving it a try before I order a battle box.I think beach bum monti might stay on the bottom the rest might go on the back wall?

Yeah I’m stoked on the whole order everything looks healthy. It is amazing that I can’t find healthy corals at lfs, but can order corals from Maine and my anemone from Texas, and they arrive looking better than lfs frag tanks.

Agreed. A lot has changed in the past few years. Everything is hard to come by and overpriced. A lot of the local reefers I used to get stuff from are gone too.

Well been fighting off Dino’s for a month, got a green killing machine UV and have been testing often for nutrients, think I’m on the right track green algae is coming back and coralline and cyano are now growing, not  much else is new .some zoas have grown new polyps and I just got some tester sps frags from FarmerTy.
