RT_BRS
FAQ #24: Is having a protein skimmer that's rated larger than your tank advantageous? Are you running an oversized skimmer? Maybe and undersized skimmer? Regardless, I'd like to know your thoughts! Link to comment
sangheili
My View: Oversize a bit and make sure the tank is stable and can deal with the nutrients. Once you have that stability, start shutting the skimmer off during the day to provide more nutrients for the coral. Link to comment
tetraodon
depends on the system and requirements, i tend to oversize a bit, but id rather have an undersize effective skimmer than an oversized inefficient skimmer. but i also use them in tandem with a fuge. Link to comment
pgrVII
Mines spot on,my skimmer is rated for 25 gallons max which my tank is with an actual 21 gallons of water.,but super effective. Link to comment

sangheili
Cool! Are you running that method on your systems? Yep Only on one system though, my newest raceway. The display sort of has this happen occasionally when I don't notice the skimmer being stupid (like when snails find their way into the volute and kill foam production). I have honestly just been focusing on feeding more lately. I run huge refugiums on my systems so between the skimming and refugium, its hard to keep any nutrient levels. Link to comment
RT_BRS
A reef octopus ns80. Sweet! Yep Only on one system though, my newest raceway. I have honestly just been focusing on feeding more lately. I run huge refugiums on my systems so between the skimming and refugium, its hard to keep any nutrient levels. That's awesome. Thanks so much for sharing! Link to comment
