So I got home from work this am and gave the Aquamax WS-1 skimmer a vinegar bath and placed it in my sump next to my Icecap K2-50 simmer. I plan to run them both until I decide which one is skimming better and then save the other as backup. fedc337d4686a8545ad0a2c021a165f3.jpg

This is 3 days of skimmate from

I also got my SaltCritters order in today

Some of the rock nems are pretty bleached but we will see how they turn out ....

Most recent water test:

Looks like I need to start running GFO, increase my NOPOX, and dramatically increase my Ca supplementation.

My new Ca dose should supply 8ppm/gal/day

My alk supplementation should be supplying 1 dKH/gal/day

assuming a Total water volume of 20gal

I went ahead and pulled the Icecap K2-50 off of the tank and will keep it in reserve as a backup skimmer.

Any thoughts as to how I can solve my calcium problem? I have a pretty hard time believing that My aquarium is chewing through calcium this fast....

Lastly, I was able to catch the "evil crab" using the shot glass method and he is now living in the overflow box

what's your alk for fresh batch of saltwater? I used to have high alk and low calcium for a while because I used Reef Crystal and alk is crazy high.

8.86

I retested Mg this am and it was 1450. I do not dose Mg

Some updates:

  • The Aquamaxx WS-1 protein skimmer is working wonderfully. It is pulling out a wetter skimmate than the Icecap K2-50, but the production rate is significantly faster than the K2-50.
  • My calcium is not back to normal (421) after daily testing and replacement. I will continue to test every 2-3 days for the next 2 weeks. Surprisingly my has increased at the same time. I was averaging around 7.8-7.9 prior to the calcium correction and now i am averaging 8.1
  • I have completely taken the stock ATO off line and I am now relying purely on my DIY ATO.
  • I have started (9/28/16) dosing BWA Sponge Excel (5 drops per 5 day top off container refill) and lugols solution (1 drop per 5 gal top off container refill). I refill my top off container every 7-10 days.
  • I have started (10/5/16) dosing Acropower via a BRS 1.1ml/min BRS dosing pump I had on hand. I will start dosing it at 2.2ml/day.
  • My Red Bangtail Waspfish is becoming much more outgoing and will now hunt down frozen mysis that are fed to the tank. In the past i have had to spot feed him.
  • The yellow candelabra gorgonian that I recieved from www.live-plants.com, which lost a large amount of tissue upon placing it in my tank, has started to recover. There is a large amount of visible tissue growth over the previous skeleton.
  • I banished the evil crab to my overflow box.

If I were to purchase a new piece of equipment, which of the following do you think it should be?

A) additional MP10 wQD

B ) Neptune salinity probe plus module

C) Neither, more livestock!

D) Other

I'd go with A... MP10, great dependable and random flow for your tank. I run 2 on my BC29 and love it. I've considered a PM2 for my Apex but have heard it's not the most reliable way to measure salinity as bubbles form in the probe and throw things out of whack. You're better off with your refractometer or better yet, the Milwaukee digital refractometer.

As far as livestock goes, I like to go slow with my stocking.

More livestock. You have enough gadgets and flow on the tank doc. ;)

Im debating on doing a KP aquatics order soon or a Pacific east order. I want a clam some time soon, but clam prices are considerably higher now than they were 2-3 years ago when i had my previous aquarium.

If you're looking for clams, Dr. Mac is the man to see. Kat might have a decent source up your way. You're in the place where most of them come in so you should have no difficulty finding a good one there.
